I'm half joking and maybe this is more of a support group topic, but does anyone else feel anxiety over opening a treasured beer? I am always reluctant to open one that I have been saving because I never know when I'll have another and then end up drinking a go-to out of the fridge. Please tell me I'm not the only crazy one! Which beers in your collection can you not seem to get up the nerve to open?

You're Crazy. When the mood hits for a certain beer I crack it open first.

You're going to get a lot of antagonistic replies of "who cares? its just beer. Drink it and don't worry about it" , but I understand where you're coming from.

I like saving beers for special occasions. Its fun to crack open something special to celebrate big or small moments in life. At one point I would get the same anxiety as you mention, but I eventually recalibrated my perspective and remembered that beer is to be opened and enjoyed. It's your beer! You're lucky to have it. When something nice happens in your life, reward yourself with it. That's what its for.

Rather than thinking about a future without having the beer in your fridge, think of the present of having that beer in your belly.

You sure about that? I've seen plenty of pics/posts on here that would imply otherwise

OP - I never cellar/age beer or hold onto it for an extended period, but yeah whenever I am drinking something limited, I'm always wondering if/when I'll get to try it again (assuming I like it)

Yea. I typically drink my heady down quick. Other more age-worthy beers I hold onto for a month or two.

Sooner or later you will drink it, so regardless when you still could have those same feelings. There is a good chance as you pass that "special" beer up, it is getting further away from it's prime. Just drink it.

I have no problem opening up limited beers. I just drank my last New Glarus Wild Peach... on a week night.... no special occasion. I just had a taste for peach.

BUT, I do have friends that **** out over opening anything that doesn't come in a standard six pack.

Drink fresh. They all go bad eventually. I do cellar some stouts and barley wines. Just pick a good occasion, when friends come over or for a good meal.

Most people will tell you your crazy but plenty of people on this site have the same issue as you do. Most people's collections get bigger and not smaller over time. Everything waiting for a special occasion that never seems to come.

Ask yourself which beer would you regret not drinking if your house caught fire and burnt to the ground tomorrow. Then drink that one.

Not me. I get a real kick out of cracking something special; a little anxiety as I put the opener to the cap, and then a delight as I recall whatever legwork went in to landing it, and then anticipation.

Not the only one who feels this way, dude. If you work hard to track something down, its a bit of a letdown after its no longer a part of your cellar--regardless of how good it was.

I do tend to savor those last few of my favorites, and might keep them in the reserves for far too long. But that's bitten me in the ass before, allowing some of my favorite IPA/IIPAs to become malt bombs. Drink 'em and replace 'em!

@OP - I am the same way for sure - I always look at those special bottles that I know can age and think 'but it is my last one!' and drink something else... I am sitting on my last Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale, my last 2013 Surly Darkness, my last 2014 BCBCS - I know they all will be great to drink right now, but I keep waiting for a special excuse to crack them...

He starts his post with "I'm half joking" - cut him some slack.

I get where you're coming from but as others have said, you're going to drink it eventually. Find a reason to celebrate something special and justify opening it for said occasion?

I don't want to consider myself a hoarder but I think I am, I will rarely drink a bomber by myself. I don't really have a rhyme or reason on how and when I pull out a beer I sought after for a while.

For instance I sought out Huna forever, then one night before going hunting I pulled it out and enjoyed it with my buddy in plastic cups in a 1 room hunting shack without power.

Yeah especially if the bomber is high ABV...sharing a quality beer with a buddy makes you less likely to regret cracking a "whale"--the smile on their face says it all

i do a fair share of hoarding up until around fall to winter, and then i will cash in. i will pop an occasional "rare" that i score for no reason though. if you get multiples, drink one that way you have something to compare after you have decided to open it .

don't worry it's just a phase you will grow out of it..

first few times you get something really special you want to hold on to it but after you get used to having all kinds of awesome beer around it doesn't have the same meaning anymore... and you'll be more apt to just grab one and drink it whenever the mood strikes you
