So, I picked up a "fresh" batch of this today in the Columbus area. I've received an amazing bottle as an extra in a previous trade, which prompted me to seek out this beer.

I drank a bottle as soon as it was cold after I returned home today. Smelled like a malty, old IPA. Tasted like a malty, old IPA with some struggling hops.

Has anyone else had this issue with bottled White Rajah? I had assumed that the demand was similar to Columbus IPA and that it would constantly be fresh. Form credible sources, these 6pks are less than a month old. Fail on Brew Kettle's part? Should they just keep it on tap?

Maybe this is why FFF doesn't distribute ZD outside of Chicago.

I've never had a bad bottle of either white rajah and Columbus ipa, so no.

I've had bad White Rajah bottles in the past. In fact, I hadn't had good White Rajah until this year, and it was extremely fresh.

Not sure why this beer falls apart so fast compared to other IPAs.

I am a huge White Rajah fan but 2 out of my last 3 6pks tasted OFF! Something like a dead ipa! The beer is just too dam good to stop buying though. Its really just the inconsistency of craft brewing. i swear Bells two hearted is almost 50/50 on whether its going to be a good batch or not!

Yea, I've had a couple bad/malty WR bottles; I chalk it up to bottle variance and still buy it next time I see it at the store.

As far as Two Hearted goes - what the hell happened to that beer? The last few times I've had it, bottle and draft, it has been shite. I will stick to my Ohio IPAs from now on, thank you very much.

My experience with White Rajah is this. At a week in the bottle and younger, you're probably not going to find a better tasting IPA out there. After this, it falls off for a while. At about a month, it hits another mini peak of flavor, but not nearly as good as fresh. After a month, WR is a pretty so so IPA, IMO. I only come to this conclusion because I purchased the beer the very first day it was available in C-bus in bottles, and first hand experience of the WR flavor ride. My guess is the distributor had it sitting around for a week or 2.

As for Two Hearted, I agree with what others are saying. I've had it in the past where it was fresh and just didn't taste like a good IPA should. A couple months back, I picked some up because I saw it had only been in the bottle 8 days, thought I'd give fresh Two Hearted another try. Mistake in buying that... Still, not a good IPA. I even left a couple in my fridge for about a month to see if they would perk up a bit, and they just got worse.

I don't see how Two Hearted still gets so much praise on this website. I don't think I'll be buying it for a very long time. There are far too many solid IPAs available to me in Columbus (mainly just CIPA though) for me to be messing around with any more Two Hearted.

If your atound strongsville stop in. I just hsd an issue similar to the OP. Chris gave me a replacement sixer and a free.draft. Yhe down side is he looks like Guy Fieri.
As for it kegged, i have a keg with a little less then 3 weeks on it and its still amazing.

Sadly there is no way to know as TBK doesn't date their bottles.

WR fades fast, usually around the month mark. Even then it's not terrible, but once you've had fresh delicious WR, it's hard to drink another and be depressed knowing it's not living up to it's full potential.

Two Hearted, I have a huge problem finding it fresh. So I tend not to buy it. On-Tap, yes please!

Surprised so many people continue to buy this beer considering their *sometimes* 50% or higher rate of bad bottles... I agree that it can be utterly excellent, but at the cost of craft sixers I can't justify buying something that I have been burned on more than once - especially when there's no bottle date to boot.

Most places this beer sells really fast, but I am sure that there are some locations that do have old bottles. But I think that there's something off on the brewery's end most likely - batch inconsistency, weird filtering practices, maybe an old/miscalibrated bottle filler? Not sure, but if your beer is known fresh and still tastes old that is a crying shame.

I've literally bought dozens of cases of WR and had maybe the equivalent of one bad six pack. It probably boils down to personal taste preferences more than old/bad bottles. Beer doesn't always taste the same to an individual, even if it's exactly the same. Food, atmosphere, mood, etc. are some of the many things that affect perception.

    This.

First time I had it was in a bottle, it was meh. Second time I had it, was on tap, and again, it was meh. Third time I had it, was in a bottle, and it was meh again. Fourth time was on cask at the Mini Real Ale, and it was undrinkable. Fifth time I had it was a bottle, and it was better than the cask, but still meh. Then I got a 6 pack on New Years Eve, and the first two bottles were AMAZING. Then the other 4 were meh.

Worst bottle variation of any beer I've seen. However, when it's on, it's ON. When it's off, there's 50 IPA's I drink ahead of it.

Any White Rajah I've ever had has always been fresh...and delicious. I've also never tasted a difference between any of them.

Come on guys, don't make me nervous.
First time I ever had White Rajah was as DLD this year and it was delicious. I know it was fresh b/c the BA who had it just picked it up from the Brew Kettle a few days prior. Well since then I've been crazing some so I just completed a trade and my White Raj just arrived. Here's to hoping it's just as delicious as I remember.

I'm interested to hear your results, as well as where that person got the bottles. I opened a bottle yesterday from the other 6pk before lunch and found the same results as the day before. The beer wasn't terrible, but had I known it was on the back-end I would have skipped on buying it. The rest are going to my father-in-law and brother-in-law, and I'm sure they'll be happy because they aren't super hop-heads.

My case was likely due to the distributor getting it to the shelf too late. Lesson learned. That's why I only buy FFF bombers when they come off the truck or from the source.

Sean, I'm not sure what to think. I'm drinking my last bottle right now, purchased from the same store as you but 1 wk earlier. This one is tasty, just as hoppy as I like it... Maybe there really is a lot of bottle variation. I'm very hesitant to buy more now.

Everything tastes better when you're on vacation. I'll try another one tomorrow, again on a clean palate when I have the day off, and then report back if it is a better bottle. I'm still hoping that magicjohnson up there gives us his thoughts as well.

I definitely will report back. Problem is I'm out of town for work, so the box is just sitting at home with my wife taunting me. I should be back on Friday and will report back then.
