I was just at a local bottle shop and saw this brew with the price tag of $36. First of all, is this accurate? If it is, why is this brew so much more expensive than other similar brews. I mean I know higher abv warrants a higher price, but that much higher?

What is so special about this brew? I am looking at a few of the reviews and while it certainly sounds tasty it doesn't sound like anything that's in another class.

    Thoughts?

    1. Normal retail price here in So. Cal was $29.99 so for out of state distrobution seems reasonable.
    2. The specialness of this is that its 100%BA where as previous vintages of the anniversary series were available in either a base version and "special" BA version
    3. This brew is so far probably the best "fresh" of the anniversary series.

    Cheers!

This year all Fruet is 100% bourbon barrel aged. Previous years they were only ~25% bourbon barrel aged. This, no doubt, factored into the price. At the Provisions shop The Bruery sells it for $30. However, here in the Philly 'burbs I paid $26 each for my bottles.

EDIT: And James beats me too it!

Ahhhh......Didn't know about the 100% barrel aging.

    Still seems damn high though.

Because, as you can see from other posts, your bottle shop is charging at least 10% too much.
    Plus the other reasons mentioned.
Pre-tax price here in Seattle is around $32.

Because the Bruery, as they have made abundantly clear over the last few years, choose not to abide by the traditional "cost plus" pricing system that most brewers use (nobly or naively, depending on your point of view). They charge what they think the market will bear, and they think that the market will bear $30+ for a super strong, super sweet, solera method BA Old Ale.

Would they make a profit selling it for $20 a bottle? Sure. But not as much of a profit, and by being underpriced relative to demand the beer would be next to impossible to track down.

As long as they keep rolling at least some of that profit into more barrels, I'm not going to complain.

Yes, it hit all over the city of Chicago and the suburbs Thursday and Friday.

EDIT: It was $29.99 at Binny's.

Wow, $36 is harsh!!! It is a sweeter anny beer than any of the prior releases from the Bruery,(Papier, Coton, Cuir). Yes, it is 100% BA, but still I pay $30 (minus RS discount), and it hurts. I'd buy more, thus trade more, if the price was lower.

Its $36 because people (especially BA's) are dumb enough to pay it. Can't fault the Bruery, they saw the beer geek market and capitalized on the stupidity. I'll pass and stick to Abacus when I need an expensive barrel aged barleywine.:sunglasses:

I think the price is high to price out hoarders. There are so many beers so many of us can't get because there are so many others that buy out the entire shelf. This allows everyone that truly wants to be able to get it.

$47 plus 8.875% sales tax in NYC. $50 for a current production beer blows my mind.
