I recently started a medicine that does not go well with alcohol. With many of my favs around 7% I am looking for recommendations on low ABV brews, something at or around 3.5 to 4 would be ok, but the lower the better... And I can have a glass now and again! Any thoughts? Thanks!

Non-alcoholic beer. If your medicine doesn't go well with alcohol....Don't drink alcohol. Your health is more important than getting a buzz. Get healthy first. Then drink.

Many of the Berliner Weisses have low alcohol as do some other sours. the tartness makes it easy to savor them and drink them slow. I would ask your Doctor about it - or better yet the pharmacist just to make sure. There might be certain times when you are OK to drink and others when you shouldn't.

Stickler...eh. Yes it is their life. You like the taste of beer, there's non-alcoholic beers that will satisfy.
There's plenty of low abv beers out there. Warning... If that medicine has acetaminophen in it then his liver will be damaged with the blending of alcohol. Sticker...give me a break.. Caring for my fellow BA er...then stickler I'll be.

Okay, so... is this a "any alcohol period is VERY bad" interaction with the medication, or more of an "a little bit would be safe, but you really don't want to go over a certain point because then bad stuff's gonna happen" interaction? If it's an "any alcohol would be VERY bad" sort of interaction... I'd suggest you just avoid alcohol entirely.

I know my sister's meds don't interact well with alcohol but she's fine drinking anything up to around 5% so long as she doesn't drink it fast--the medication seems to basically amplify the effect of alcohol, so one 4-5% beer might seem to have double the usual effect, but as long as she doesn't get too much too fast there's no problem.

If it's a milder ("a little is fine, but be careful") degree of interaction like that... I'd suggest finding something that's 5% or less but also has enough flavor to it that you'd be okay with drinking it for a significantly longer-than-normal length of time, to spread the alcohol out a little. Something that's good both fridge-cold and after warming up, preferably, so you can get it out of the fridge when you start drinking it and then still like it when it's been sitting out warming for a while (drinking slower than usual, so it's going to have more time to warm.)

Drinking during a good meal or afterward, rather than just having a beer, may also be a good idea--alcohol absorbs quicker on an empty stomach vs. when there's food in there.

Thank you for the replies so far.

To be clear... The warning on the medicine states I should use caution regarding alcohol consumption and to consult my physician, which I have. They have advised to consume lightly until I see how alcohol effects me and to not operate a car or machinery. Which is advice I am following. I have a good and open relationship with my doctor and will continue to have an on going conversation with them about this. Further, prior to the medicine and on the medicine I so not drink to excess. This is not about getting a buzz. I have a glass of beer with food, on occasion, which I enjoy very much.

I am not in any way encouraging anyone to not follow to warnings on any medicines that they may be taking.

Is Tired Hands distributed in your area? They look like they brew a lot of low abv beers.

If I were in PA I'd try Yard's Brawler, a brew in the style of an English Mild at 4.2%.

But I'm in MA, so when I want lower-ABV beers my first resort is Notch Brewing, which brews nothing but.

Forget the tired hands question, didn't realize they don't sell beer outside of the brewpub.

Good for you checking and asking your doctor (most people don't)! You would be amazed at how stupid some people are though - most people don't actually know that acetaminophen + alcohol = Liver Failure, so I understand some posters concerns.

I would second suggestions for Uinta - they make some very good lower ABV beers because of Utah's strict alcohol laws. Actually, any Utah brewery is likely to have pretty solid beers at or just under 4% so I suggest checking some of them out.

Which styles do you prefer? I know they are laughed at on BA, but Murphy's and Guinness are good low ABV options if you like stouts. Do you like fruity options? I'd go with Lindemans lambics ...

If it is an antibiotic you are on... you can enjoy Low ABV okay. It is actually a myth that antibiotic is destroyed by booze. The myth grew up when antibiotic first became available and was widely used to treat STIs. Docs didn't want people getting drunk and then getting busy while possible still infected with whatever... This thinking still persist today

If it is another medicine I would tend to say think carefully before deciding to drink, but as said above by some it is your life and live it how you want.

So I recommend Raddler's low ABV and full of lemon they are reasonably tasty.
Becks' Blue one of the only good zero alcohol beers I have had.
Most British bitters are pretty low in ABV but lose none of the taste so try them out..

Goddammit, I'm in the same boat as you. It sucks, man.

However, I can still drink my high ABVs ... I just can't have as much as I'd like. I normally keep myself to a maximum of 12 oz of a strong stout, for example, or a couple pints AT MOST of a session beer. Silver lining though -- instead of mindlessly chugging, I've learned to truly appreciate and savor every sip.

Sorry for not answering your question ... just thought I'd empathize.
