theres nothing wrong with being enthusiastic about beer, even if that entails talking with others about your taste or whatnot. Things only cross into snobbery when you become condescending, like if you snicker at someone or give them shit for ordering a certain beer you may not like. As with every hobby, you should aim to become more well-versed, which inherently involves garnering and exercising knowledge to some degree.

It reminds me of another one of my interests, music. As a musician, it would be whack AF to see someone talk down to someone who listens to pop music while flaunting their interest in jazz but at the same time I really enjoy talking shop and getting in depth with people who have similar interest as I do. Sometimes that conversation involves getting technical, which I refuse to believe is snobby. I guess what I'm trying to say is, that to some degree, excessive tolerance defeats the purpose of getting into beer, or anything. Learn what you like but understand the concept of objectivity, its elementary. Just dont be an asshole, beer or otherwise

I only drink beer made with organic free-range cruelty-free hops, served in reclaimed glasses made from soy plants that don't cast shadows. That's not snobby, it's just common sense.

People need to quit worrying about what others think. Beer snobs most likely don't remember you at all. They just remember their own brilliant remarks.

It's not just beer. There's an entire generation of entitled know-it-alls out there, forcing their weak opinions on anyone within earshot. I blame the Teletubbies.

I think sometimes people forget that they too once were new to the scene. And add in this overly romanticized image breweries and enthusiasts like to give themselves, and you get some pretty douchey attitudes.

The only thing worse than a beer snob is someone who is intimidated by one to the point they are scared to walk in to a bar and order a beer for fear of being laughed at. Sorry but that is ridiculous.

Mike Judge can do no wrong. Also, fuck beer snobs - in the most efficient way mathematically possible.

So we should shame the victims of the douchery and not those perpetrating it? Got it

Of course not but as the OP stated, there are way more humble beer drinkers than there are snobs so you can't let a very small minority keep you from going into a bar and enjoying yourself. My experience has been that 95% of the craft beer enthusiasts I have met in Breweries, Bars, Bottle shops, etc. are helpful, knowledgeable and pretty down to earth people. You can't control everyone's behavior so why worry about the other 5%?

I haven't experienced a lot of people who will look down on anyone not drinking a Heady Topper, but can't you just not listen to them? The trouble with throwing around snobbery accusations is that anybody who ever likes anything better than another more popular thing has probably been the target of one whether it was true or not.

You're not a snob until you're a dick to someone.

Because that kind of attitude should NEVER be acceptable to someone who claims to be a beer ADVOCATE. Every person that 5% drives away is another person that could be supporting the breweries we all love and support. They're driving away one person that could be flipped from buying strictly macro brews to all craft beers or majority craft beers. There's no reason that benefits craft beer as a whole that justifies pretentious douches treating new comers in a hostile manner.

I'd much rather (and do) identify myself as a beer geek vs a snob. At least geeks know how to have fun(isn't that the entire point?), be friendly, and not care about what "all the cool people are drinking". As my avatar indicates, I am into underground extreme music. In the past few years, there has been much of the same elitism in metal "community" pages to newcomers. The same rule applies for underground brews(to snobs/elitists) : quit getting on some high horse as if you have some sort of authority and bashing new people just because their tastes are not the exact same as yours. That guy or gal you just "called out" could have been the next great band or craft brewer. This unfounded hostility turns people off from the scene as a whole. Why would you want to go a bar where everyone judges what you're drinking or go to a show and people judge your entire personal tastes based off of a band's shirt you wore to the venue? If this attitude continues, people will flat out stop giving craft brewers a chance and this amazing movement will fade back into obscurity sooner or later.

I knew someone was gonna pop in and say that. But if I were to add that part, it would just confuse the poor bastards even further.

I recently had a coworker snicker at me for talking about IPAs, I had no idea that "people who like IPAs are hipster trend-followers" was a thing until then. What is with that phenomenon? I tried to explain that there are good and bad brews in any subcategory or genre, and it just lead to further remarks that those who seek out IPAs and who have favorite beers that are IPAs are essentially bullshitting and don't truly know anything about beer. Was pretty mad but held it together because I was at work.
