Now, don't get me wrong, I like a good Barrel aged stout, like my locals Hoppin' Frog BORIS or Thirsty Dog Siberian Night (and Wulver, though not obviously a stout), but this recent news about the re-release of a BA Turbo Shandy from HF made me scratch my head a bit.....

A barrel aged Shandy, in the middle of winter, for god's sake?

Are we going a bit "barrel aged crazy" here? Are some styles not really suitable for barrel aging?

OMG, YES! However, if it was from the other HF brewery my answer might be different. But maybe not even then.

The insane amounts of barrel aged stuff does not excite me one bit... I personally don't care for it and avoid buying any of them.

So yes, I think the industry is going a bit barrel-overboard.

We know pretty much anything that HF makes is going in a barrel.

I thought that the first time I ever saw a barrel-aged IPA. But then I tried it.

I say stick to Stouts in Bourbon/Oak Barrels and Sours in Oak/Wine Barrels. I do NOT need Tequila, Rum, or any other kinds of barrels and definitely don't want an IPA, Hefeweizen, or a damn shandy inside of it.

No...it's just a style. If it somehow offends your sensibilities...don'y try it...don't drink it.

Put it in a barrel, shove it in a corner for a while, tripple the price, whats not to like?
But seriously, YES, this barrel aged fever is out of control.

I'm just recently branching out to BA beers as I currently didn't care for them. However, I don't think I'll branch out this far; I'll never begrudge anyone for drinking what they like, but I won't even touch a regular Shandy, let alone one barrel aged.

I'm more shocked that they only want $12.99 a bottle.

While a major gimmick, the whiskey sour idea sounds interesting to say the least. This to me is a total gimmick but hell it might be decent who knows. I would be willing to try it once if only because I love trying new stuff.

You know what? I had a barrel aged ESB and it was fantastic. Just a small, subtle oak flavor blended with an otherwise "okay" tremendously improved the taste for me.

Moral of the story: you call it overboard, I just call it experimenting and seeing what happens.

So, "barrel aging" is a style now?

Always thought of it as a "treatment", not a style.....a stout, porter or shandy are all styles, right?

I agree the whole barrel deal is becoming a bit overblown..There was a recent thread here about a certain barrel maker...great,a whole new sub-culture of 'barrel snobs'..what's next?..a preferred bottle maker??

    Hoppin' Frog is not "HF".

That said, I could see a shandy being decent in the right kind of barrel--maybe white wine? Even tequila could be pretty good based on the spicy citrus notes it imparts.

Wouldn't really say that to be true.....

Of the 40 beers listed on the Hoppin' Frog website, only 8 are "BA'ed" ....although the new Turbo Shandy (BA version) and last weekend's Port Barrel aged Karminator Doppelbock are not listed, so total of 10 beers out of 40, or roughly 25% of their total beers are being BA'ed
