For many years the monks have brewed dopplebocks for the purpose of fasting. Forty days without food. Just dopplebocks. So I ask the question: What dopplebock would you choose to drink for the entire season of Lent if that's all you could consume?

ayinger celebrator is my favorite dopplebock, but the the issue is i dont love the style enough to only drink them for the whole 40 days.

Less food, more alcohol. This "fasting" thing sounds a lot like an excuse to get drunk.

Ayinger is a great standard. Personally, I'm giving up church for lent. And forever

I wish there were more really good domestic doppelbocks. It is such a great style, and most breweries don't even bother with it.

now that i think about it, Ramsetin winter wheat may be my favorite more so then ayinger. its made in jersey and one of the best domestic takes on the style. BA has it listed as a wizenbock, although highpoint calls it a doppelbock on thier website so its up for your interpretation i suppose

It just might be the most under-appreciated, under-represented style since everyone is too busy making the next IPA.

Some can only appreciate a beer if a bunch of hops are thrown in, lol. I bang my head against the wall every time I read a review of a doppelbock that complains about the lack of hop presence.

It's definitely made with their weizen yeast, so it's properly listed here. Until they come up with a doppelweizenbock category .

Actually, this may be one of those instances where the word 'doppelbock' only refers to the strength, not the style- at least the way High Point seems to be using it.
