Not a doppelbock, but definitely my choice. And finally available in bottles.

Thanks for posting this -- makes me glad I've returned to Catholicism:grinning:

... in answer to your question, I'll have to locate a rarity in this style -- something with a double digit ABV

My favorite of those I've tried is Ayinger's Celebrator. I've been meaning to try Weihenstephaner's Korbinian but now its out of stock near me. I've also had Spaten Optimator and it was just ok (I used it to cook a roast too).

How is Tröegs Troegenator Double Bock? I can get that at my local beer shop for $1.99 a bottle. Is it worth the price of admission?

How about Samichlaus Bier Helles or Samichlaus Classic Bier. Both have 14%abv. Is that enough? :grinning:

My local store has both of them but they are a bit expensive. Samichlaus Bier Helles is $19 for a 750ml bottle and Samichlaus Classic Bier is $5.49 for an 11oz bottle. It won't take much of this beer to help you find God. lol

I would vote for this too, although after 40 days @~$4 per bottle my wallet will have been the one really fasting.

Troegenator would be my second choice I think. In truth I don't drink DB's enough to know many of the best besides Celebrator.

Troegenator is very well done IMO, give it a try.

While they are excellent and good for fasting if you're a monk, Belgian Dubbels and Doppelbocks are NOT the same style. Optimator IS a great Doppelbock.

Beyond most American styles, German beers are easily my favorites, not Belgians. I wish more US breweries made German styles.

Celebrator, Korbinian, and Trogenator are all great. Optimator turned me on to the style and is still a good buy

Korbinian. Maybe aged Samichlaus Helles (3+ years), which I like more, but that would be a bit like dessert every day for 40 days.

True Story - My wife and I travelled to the monastery while on our honeymoon in Germany and fell in love with Andechs Dopplebock. So much so that we vowed that if we had a son, his middle name would be Andechs. Alas, three girls later we adopted a Boxer puppy. He is now AKC registered "Andechs Dunkles Dopplebock". Prost!

I'm pretty sure they still ate solid food, just a much smaller variety.

Either way, I can't wait to see some DB's come out.

I dunno about nothing but doppelbocks for 40 days (I think I'd start to miss food pretty quick, even if I did have really good beer in its place), but I really liked the one doppelbock I've been able to try so far. I also noticed that I didn't get hungry for a pretty long time every time I've had one, compared to pretty much every other kind of beer I've tried (...and the one time I did eat anything after having one, I felt absolutely stuffed... from nothing but a handful or so of peanuts. So I can definitely believe that people could keep from getting hungry with a doppelbocks + light snacks combination.)

I suppose if I was going to go on an "all beer diet" for a month or so, doppelbocks would probably be a pretty good choice for that. "Great taste, more filling?" XD
