This is the second time in a row this has happened to me and it's driving me a bit crazy. My glasses are beer clean and it's kind of annoying. I clean them and wipe them down numerous times before a beer is poured. I bought a bottle of Pipeworks Citra recently and that carbonation was lacking and it was a bit syrupy with more pine and grass notes than than tropical notes. It tasted good but I had a feeling something was off. I bought another bottle, and it tasted like a different beer to me. Not as syrupy and I was getting the more juicy tropical flavors I was expecting form the Citra. So I just bought a 4 pack of Surly Abrasive, and first can was massively lacking on carbonation. I made sure it was beer clean before I poured so all good. In fact I put another beer into the same glass after Abrasive and the carbonation was healthy and perfect. I know breweries can't be spot on all the time, but it bothers me when I pay top dollar and the beer isn't properly carbonated. I just want to have it the way it's intended as well as they do. So has anyone else had this problem? And also, what would be the reason for this? Some insight and experience from fellow BA's would be great.

Certain batches of Abrasive had carbonation issues. Contact Surly, I'm sure they'll help you out with the issue.

Edit: Brewers are not perfect and sometimes there is brewing issues, lack of Carb, secondary fermentation in the bottle, etc. If the problems continue address the issue with the brewer.

Definitely contact them...I had a can of Eric the Red from Odd13 Brewing in Colorado and when the Brewmaster saw my review on here he contacted me and told me it was a bad canning run and had been under carbed. So he sent me two new cans and their DIPA to try!

Thanks for the advice Hopefully they will do something. Do You guys think it's likely that the other three cans are under carbonated?

I got 8 shipped to me from a past trade partner and only 1 had an issue. Mine was from the batch they claimed had many reports of issues and I guess I got lucky. My girl did drink a couple and I don't know if she would have known anything was wrong. Still a good ratio with all the issues

I had no idea Surly Abrasive had carbonation issues. Was it this batch? Thanks for the heads up. I actually just emailed them but I am not sure if they are going to do anything about it. It just frustertaing when I pay 20 dollars for a 4 pack and the beers are under carbonated.

What was the canning date of your Abrasives? I believe it was 1-9-15, 1-12-15 and 1-13-15 that had the most trouble.

I had a 4 pack shipped, 1 out of 4 had very low carb (but was still tasty and worth the trade) and the other 3 were spot on perfect carb wise.

Lack of carbonation is a problem with the bottle or can or tap. Dirty glasses cause a pour head but they do nothing to the carbonation. Bad carbonation can be the result of a bad batch or a bad container or improper secondary fermentation. If you have a flat beer contact the retailer and see if they will make it right. If you have three left out of a four pack, take all three back to the retailer and get a new 4 pack.

Thanks for your input. I emailed Surly earlier today and I got no response. Im not sure if they will reply. Im debating on sending another email or even calling. I bought the Surly Abrasive from the Beer Temple in Chicago which is the best beer store I have ever been to. They would most likely take care of me because they are that great, but they don't have any more Abrasive and that is the beer I want to drink.

Take it back to the store and get something you like. If you can't find it at another store you can usually order it here: http://france44.com/beer (they are in Minneapolis).

Sometimes you get burned, but the good moments easily outweigh the bad. Either way you're poorer.

Thanks for the heads up on that website. The prices are not bad as well.

Did you feel that the cans that were carbonated tasted a little better? More so than the under carbonated one. I'll see if my other cans are carbonated tonight. I'm hoping they are.

i mean, flavor wise there wasn't much of a difference. in the aroma there was less of it since there wasn't any head on the one flat one. but the other cans tasted just as great, maybe a little better.
