To start off, I searched through the forums past and present to make sure I wasn't rehashing anything here. If I am and I missed it, I apologize.

After reading through the thread Men's Journal: Dogfish Head's Sam Calagione Squares Off Against Budweiser, the subject of price came up in regards to AB/InBEV. Some think that price matters when it comes to AB products versus the competition and vice versa. I started wondering how much price does matter to consumers across the board, so I wanted to start this poll to see where we all stand here on BA.

Now I know we are a smaller portion of consumers of the overall beer landscape, but I still want to see where we all stand on our end. If we could put this same poll to beer drinkers as a whole, I am sure you would see a majority of the BMC only consumers choosing price over all else. Not everyone, but I feel a large majority of macro consumers lean this way.

Personally, price doesn't bother me a whole lot. If we are talking a dollar difference for a sixer or something, I am not going to care. If we are talking double the price, then it may start mattering to me a bit more.

So, what are your thoughts? If the price of your favorite beer/style rose a considerable amount, would you then look for perhaps your second or third favorite version of that style? Or is your favorite beer worth the price, no matter what that price may be?

Sadly search has never worked well on this site and the old one either etc.

So yea I asked it many times. but there is no simple answer. On my bd, once a year I will buy what I want price be damned, but I budget for it. Otherwise I buy the best I can afford. for some they buy more than they can afford. I mean if I had unlimited funds I buy the best everyday. but I do not.

btw in opposition to all the blue moon haters I liked it from the start and its a go to "cheap" beer, I am proud to drink it. I do not care what label it has. still tastes great to me.:grinning::grinning::grinning::stuck_out_tongue:

I not bought a $11/6 from Founders in a while. I not actually bought beer from store besides Bm Since October. I bought for the wife. Me I am cleaning the house for the trip...

I'm with you...generally speaking, price doesn't matter to me much. I'm fortunate enough to say that in regards to finances. If there are beers I want, I usually just buy them. No questions asked.

But when stores upcharge to **** prices, that's where I draw the line. I used to be one of those people who would pay whatever the price to have the "sought after" beers. Now, unless it's reasonably priced, I generally pass. There are just too many great beers out there at normal prices to be had. I've given up "chasing" beers.

Price has lead me to more or less swear off bombers, which includes some of my favorite brews from some of my favorite breweries. It's not too hard, though -- Parabola ain't every day beer for me anyway, so it's not so hard to wait around a couple months until it pops up on tap somewhere.

At the 4/6 pack level, price isn't so much of a concern, though, ironically, I tend to balk at stuff like DFH, which can push $16-$18/4 pack in some case.

I have a quality/price slope. I am always willing to pay more for better quality. I am not however willing to pay a huge premium for quality.

I figure in the price-point and then compare what's available at the store. I'll splurge if the beer is a limited-release, but at the same time it should be within the ballpark of the suggested retail price.

Not sure how to describe it other than just "knowing" what's overpriced, cheap, etc.

I like to think there's a thin line between buying what I'd like v. buying with blinders on. For instance, Union Jack has priced itself out for me since freshness comes into play at that price. I love it but can't justify $14 a sixer on what may not be in it's best possible condition for that price. Guarantee that it's within say, 3 -4 weeks? Then I'll likely buy it at that price, just not with 3 or 4 months on it...Then there's value for the style. I'll gladly pay mid teens for a great BA RIS or Barleywine but never in my life can I see the day where I'll pay mid teens for a Brown Ale (a' la Brown Note, but there may be something else to play in that factor as well.....)

I completely agree. There is an effort to find that quality to price value sweet spot, so the acceptable price increases with perceived quality accordingly. I have a cap, but it varies by style.

I do tend to shy away from unknowns that are at a higher price point (The Bruery and the like).

I'm willing to spend more for a sure bet (meaning i've tried it personally and haven't been disappointed).

Being into craft beer, i've accepted that i'll be paying a bit more. How much more is dependent on many factors

If price didn't matter at all I would have a hell of a lot more BA Biscotti Break in my cellar.

I think I am in the majority that stays within reasonable priced beers with the occasional splurge on something special.

I have a specific budget each month, therefore price is a huge factor for me. I very rarely buy bombers or other high priced beers because I would rather spend $9 for a six pack than for a single bomber. I also regularly purchase and consume Standard American Lagers to pad my budget (and because I actually enjoy them)

I will, on occasion, splurge for something that is normally out of my price range, but I will not pay what I feel are over inflated prices for anything on a regular basis.
There is plenty of great beer out there that is reasonably priced.

I think price point is important, but I will usually jump on any new beer that I think sounds killer if it isn't like $30. If the beer doesn't stack up to the price, I take that into consideration on my rating of it as well as if I will ever consider buying it again. At the end of the day, I think price point definitely ties into the beer, but I try to give a lot of beer a shot.

There isn't enough price differentiation between most brands for this to matter much.

Also, craft beer is still incredibly cheap, relatively speaking (to other premium alcoholic beverage categories such as wine and spirits). So, you're not going to see that much price sensitivity when most everything in the category is already relatively cheap.

I'm sensitive to the price of bombers more then sixers or 4 packs. Around here bombers can go from $5 for a Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout, to $10 for Southern Tier Choklate, up to $15 for Evil Twin Biscotti Break. I'm much more likely to grab the $5-10 option then the $10+ unless I just really wanted to try something or it's a special release.

I'll likely never pay $20 or more for a bomber of anything, I could care less if everyone on Earth except me rates it a 200 out of 5. I can wait until I find whatever beer that is on tap somewhere, where I don't necessarily mind an inflated price for a glass, or I can pick up a six pack of something like Eliot Ness and enjoy it just as much. If it's smaller than a bomber and they're charging even $10 for it, I'll just laugh and walk away. I can get Ayinger Brau Weisse and Aventinus Eisbock for less than that, and those are the only perfect 5s I've given.

I will pay $25 or so for a four pack for something I know is fantastic, but that works out to like $12 a bomber or so.

Assuming these price increases are brewery-driven, then I'll keep buying as long as I personally feel it's worth it (which is not something that's easy to define). I'm all about quality over quantity (I tend to buy a lot of singles/bombers), and would much rather drink less of something I perceive to be better.

Price increases driven by opportunistic retailers is another matter entirely.
