Im not lucky enough to have founders in my area (that should be changing soon) but for those that do I have a question about 2 of their beers. Is backwoods bastard and KBS released in different quantities and are they priced differently? I find backwoods to be the superior and more enjoyable beer yet it seems almost too easy and cheap to trade for which surprises me. KBS seems inferior to bcbcs and on par with a good batch of big bad baptist (I think batch 31 & 34 were better actually) which is always available so what makes it seem so highly sought after, just more coffee stout fans or is it smaller production amount? Not trying to bash KBS, it's a fine brew just trying to understand.

Backwoods is very much released in greater quantities than KBS. Just to give you an example, it is released at $12 or so a 4 pack and will sit on shelves in GA for a while, whereas KBS is very limited and most stores sell a limit of a bottle or two at $6/bottle limit and then it's gone. KBS is much more limited, at least around here.

If you enjoy BWB much more, stock up. It is a great beer indeed!

If you enjoy Backwoods better then you are in a good spot. It is more readily available in Founders distro regions than KBS. There were 4 packs available in Chicago until at least January in some areas, maybe longer.

Well I will say the different releases/batches vary a good deal, some are mediocre while others are fantastic and the hit or miss kind of sucks :slight_frown:

IMO: Both are great beers. And totally different beers (other than the barrel aging being common). KBS has that "cache'" around it since there's much less of it produced and very hard to obtain even in areas that get quite a bit of Founders. Backwoods can be obtained by the case (at least here in Philly) quite easily, so it doesn't have that "must-track-this-down-at-all-costs" aura. I love Backwoods and snapped up a case as soon as it was released. Cheers!

I agree with you on this. KBS is overhyped by the limited release. Much better out there. But I also think Wulver >> BWB.

I'm inclined to agree that Wulver is better than BWB by a very slight margin but the difference in price between the two will always lead to me picking up BWB over Wulver. I buy a 4 pack of Wulver a year (at $28 a 4 pack, it's hard to buy more than that), and that doesn't compare to a $14/4 pack of BWB. The slight difference in taste is completely outweighed by the huge price difference.

Good to know about the price point and quantity expectations. After the local search for HopSlam, I can only imagine what it's going to be like for KBS.

Second everything that has been said. KBS will be at most 1 4 pk per person if you are lucky. I think it was 21.99 last year. Good beer but not mind blowing. Personally i think its beetter after 6 or 8 months as it tastes like coffee brownie batter after it sits for a bit.

There's a ton of backwoods still here, I might have to revisit this one. Didn't like it at all the first time I tried it.

Backwoods is easier to get and a lot tastier than KBS IMO.

Beer nerds did this. They used to just make it once a year and send it out to their accounts without any fanfare, but the overwhelming demand made them start doing brewery releases and what have you.

I like backwoods much more, but i'm still going to grab a 4 pack of KBS, just because i know people who haven't tried it, and i want to share it with them (and because i'm lucky enough to have one held for me, so i don't have to chase the whale). I personally don't go crazy for KBS. With that, Founders is one of, if not my favorite brewery.

KBS is gone the day it comes in, Backwoods is on the shelf for a couple months or even longer in some stores. Founders knows very well that if they released KBS in the same volume as they release Backwoods the mysticism would fade. The way a surprisng amount of people talk about KBS as being, for lack of better term, "the be all end all" portrays founders in a great light every time it's brought up. If it was readily available for a month, or really anything more than a day, everyone would have "been there done that". It's all marketing.

KBS is a good beer that's highly overrated. I'll also add I no longer support Founders since they sold off a stake in their company to a Spanish owned company. Never a fan of sell outs, but what annoys me is why don't these guys sell a stake to a good American company like Boston Beer Company or Sierra Nevada.
