First Off This Is A GREAT beer!
I may just be part of the small remnant of people who don't really LOVE Troegs Nugget Nectar but I would love to explain why.
    The Hype!
Well it's obvious this beer has a tremendous amount of hype going for it, why? I don't really understand. Its a good beer but the amount of hype it generates is not proportional to the actual beer itself IMHO! But my main reason for this has to do with the way the beer is marketed, which brings me to the conflict.
    The Conflict!
"This is one awesome IPA" say's the majority of people. IT IS NOT A IPA! But troegs markets it as such and quite frankly so does ratebeer.com. This creates alot of confusion. The opening line on their website for the beer is: "Squeeze those hops for all they’re worth! Nugget Nectar Ale will take hopheads to nirvana with a heady collection of American hops". You would think their talking about an IPA but then they say: "Our Imperial Amber Ale", and finish with "intensified with whole flower Nugget hops added to our hopback vessel, resulting in an explosion of citrus, resin and pine. Besides the Amber Ale part this sounds like an IPA to me! but it isnt! Plus the with the 93ish IBUs it mine as well should be. Why does troegs classify this beer as an Imperial Amber but market it as an IPA? I fell for the marketing aspect expecting a "Hopheads Nirvana" only to find a beer that I considered Rather syrupy and sweet with a bitter aftertaste. Sure there were some other flavors in their but that candy cane surgery sweetness and bitterness dominated not to mention the somewhat tamed(consider the stats on the beer) aroma, even at 8 days old! Great Beer but doesnt justify the hype. Anyone else have similar feeling about Nugget Nectar?

Thought the same- it didn't live up to the hype for me. Solid beer, would buy again, but I personally like Perpetual IPA by Troegs better and I like Lagunitas Imperial RED better for a comparable of the style. Different strokes I guess.

I can agree with you. Nugget Nectar is a GOOD beer, but it is not the incredibly-awesome-oh-my-god-i'm-dying-i-need-more beer a lot of folks make it to be.

I personally don't love it, but I agree it is a damn fine beer. It ain't world class or anything like that, but when it's on tap here in Philadelphia for $3-$6, it is a good deal.

Moral: don't post on BA after you've been drinking a lot of Nugget Nectar.

I had it recently and thought it was extremely good. It is an IPA, but leaning more the British style due I guess to the Nugget or how it is used. Lots of flavor but very drinkable.

if you get it the day it was bottled, it's mind blowing. the longer time goes on, the tamer it gets unfortunately. Not much staying power on that one. With that said, I agree that perpetual > NN

8 days old is pretty damn fresh in my book!

I agree and it is likely due to the dry hopping (or hop backing so to speak) with Nugget. It's this hop that gives the top note and freshness is key with any dry-hopped beer.

I traded some local IPAs one of which was Zombie Dust (which I have easy access too, so no loss there) but received 8 cans in return. I like a wide variety of beer, and am loyal to only a few, so again my fault for even considering receiving 8 of anything that I don't absolutely love. I don't fault the person I traded with, but definitely myself. I too bought into the apparently excellent advertising that Troegs has created...most of it fictitious, but well done-fooled you and I anyway OP!

Its an Amber Ale (not my flavor profile at all) so just say that. Not a bad beer by any means, just not what it says it is. I gave my 7 remaining cans away to friends and as extras in trades. One-hitter-quitter for this guy. I'll pass when it comes around again.

That's not marketing it as an IPA, that’s marketing it as a very hop forward beer. Using lots of hops does not make a beer an IPA. Having a malt backbone does not mean a beer has not got lots of hop flavors in it. Furthermore, Troeg's is not responsible for other people's misclassification of their beers.

As for why it generates so much excitement, it’s a first rate beer that lots of people like. That’s not hype, that’s substance. You may not like as much as other do, but so what? We can't all like the same things. Imagine how boring that would be.

Its not an IPA. But i see why you may think of it as an English Style IPA. Either way, brewmaster has the final word and that is "Imperial Amber"!

I was a bit confused myself when I got some and read the can...an "Amber Ale" eh? Well, in any case it's now one of my new fav's...whatever it is.

That's true but it reminded me of a really good English pale ale/bitter (cask). Maybe they felt the color was too dark to call it IPA but it's in that style IMO.

The main [only?] reason it has a hyped-up reputation is because it's a seasonal. If it were available year round, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

I was so excited this year to try it I bought 3 six packs of it and some cans. But it was a disappointment and my money would have been better spent on a regular old sixer of Stone IPA. But none the less it is a good beer Im lucky to get, just wish the hype/marketing wasent so strong.

You could make this kind of thread for a lot of the hyped beers out there.

Nailed it right there. I think that same label can be applied to the majority of super-hyped beers
