But hops are not used exclusively to make IPAs. Troegs Impending Descent for instance clocks in at 113 IBUs but is an RIS.

They also make a tasty summer seasonal that says "crisp & hoppy" on the bottle. Just because it's a hoppy pils doesn't mean Troegs is trying to confuse anyone.

They didnt used to. Ratebeer scaled back the number of style classifications. Its the same with Lagunitas Imperial Red being classified as an American Strong Ale. Both of these beers fall under the Imperial Red/ Imperial Amber subset. They arent IPAs.

I can't like this enough. NN is just another seasonal beer that people really like and get excited about when it is that time of the year. Much like Hopslam, Celebration, etc. It's not the greatest beer of all time but it's a good beer people like. Anything type of hype is pretty much completely created by peoples' crazy expectations.

My biggest pet peeve on BA: people constantly equating not liking a beer as much as others with the beer being "overrated". Haven't we had this exact same thread about every single top beer originated by someone who doesn't like the beer as much as others and then claiming the beer's status is due to "hype"?

I don't like Heady at all, but it would be insanely short-sighted of me to think that the beer is overrated just because I don't like it. For whatever reason, it doesn't work for me. I sincerely doubt the several years at the #1 spot on BA is more likely to be due to "hype" (though I look cooler saying that it is due to "hype" and acting like I'm too good for the #1 ranked beer on BA) than the fact that it is an awesome beer for the vast majority of people (just not for me for some reason).

Regarding Nugget Nectar in particular, I think that it is truly a unique beer in terms of the combination of its style, mouthfeel, malt backbone, and hop forward taste. The nice thing about that is that you don't even have to like it to appreciate its uniqueness. I'm totally fine if you don't like it, but please don't equate your not liking it as much as others to it being "overrated", especially since it is not a "need a ticket/one-day a year/brewery only release" which is a much more likely a source of overrating than it being a readily available seasonal.

    /end rant

It's a hop forward beer. Shut up and drink it, or don't.

my problem with NN is that
    1. I live in York and have yet to get any cans.
    2. Just as I suspected, people are selling the cans for the same or more than the 6-pack. That aint right, man.

Only IPAs can be hop forward = lol

Nugget nectar is like an English style IPA / PA / Bitter = lol

People think Troegs are engaged in misleading advertising = lol

This makes me sad. I grabbed a 4-pack of cans for $9.99 in Wilmington, DE today. 6-pack of bottles was $12.99. TONS of both available.

To my knowledge, Troegs has only produced one actual "IPA," in their main line-up (Blizzard of Hops). The Scratch series is a different story all together. Perpetual IPA, is labeled as an "Imperial Pale Ale," not and India Pale Ale. I know, I know, we can argue that Perpetual is actually an IPA until we're blue in the face, but it's futile. That being said, John and Chris Troegner have always steered away from classifying any of their beers as an "India Pale Ale." Maybe they just want to differentiate themselves from all the IPA producers out there? I only bring this up, because there's a lot of talk on here about intentional marketing strategies. Anyway.

    Cheers!

This!! This is basically what I wanted to say.

To the OP, and others who seem to assume that talking about hops means the beer is an IPA. At no point in time have they ever called it an IPA. If you can't read the clearly printed words on the front of the packaging that say "Imperial Amber" then that seems like a personal problem. Of course they are going to have a focus on the hops because that's what people want. It is a pretty hoppy beer, by the way. Just because it's not a bitter bomb doesn't mean it's not hoppy. However, at the end of the day, they clearly market and label it as an imperial amber. Your presumptions are not their fault.

Cans came in a few weeks after bottles here with the same brewed on date (1/27). The bottles were only 5 days old on arrival and were phenomenal. The cans, only 3 weeks old, were already falling off. I had a 5 month old Nectar last summer and it was among the worst beers I have ever tasted.

This beer is amazing fresh, but probably has the shortest freshness window of anything I've tasted (inb4 ZD jokes).

I swear I think the "hype" on this beer is either 1 generated here or 2 its generated in other places. It recently came to NC and I did not see any "hype" behind this beer. Its in grocery stores right now and its fairly reasonable in price and tastes pretty good. Its not flying off the shelves so, maybe everyone around here missed the hype train! The only hype I saw or hear was on this website! It was not overly priced and was easy to get everywhere. Literally when Harris Teeter sells a beer its not a beer that is overhyped!
