Never really thought about it but, I would say a mix of a rater and ticker. Ticker because I think it's fun to know how many different beers I have tried and the resulting variety I have experienced.

Coupled with that experience, beers can change from year to year or even batch to batch as things are tweaked or if each year is a different by design so rating is "important" to have regularly. Rating, I've found, makes me think about the beer a bit more and take my time enjoying the experience.

I rate for the simple fact that I want to remember if I liked something or not. Once you have had a few hundred beers (or much much more) it gets a little hard to remember the ones that didn't really wow you, or the ones that were just awful. Those you always remember. But all the ones in the middle. Kinda hard to keep them apart.

    Yep

I like to rate, it lets me look back on something in the future if I can't remember if i've had it. I also use Untappd, but BA has been around much longer than Untappd, so I like the redundancy.

But, I dislike having to write any sort of a review when my rating is out of line with the average. I'd prefer to not justify.

never rated and honestly don't see the appeal.

    I drink beer.

    reviewing beer...
    it takes time.
I have a memory (some memory).
I can't imagine somebody I have never met really cares what I think.
I write a lot for work already. writing is like work. drinking beer is like not work.

    to paraphrase Elvis Costello
"Writing about beer is like dancing about architecture"
    Cheers.

Yes, I have a bad memory when it comes to remembering what something tasted like so I do it mostly so that I can go back and see what I thought.

That being said some people I think are just going for high score, I was reading peoples reviews yesterday and I saw one dudes name kept popping up so I did a little investigating. He had reviewed 61 beers yesterday, including 7 in an 8 minute span! mostly all of them American Adjunct Lagers, most of them rated 1/5, and most only saying the minimum 5 works required, something like (another terrible watered down beer). I mean wtf is that, whatever floats your boat man but that's not helpful to anybody....including yourself.

For sure. I don't have to "justify" my own taste, but the site has forced me to write like 20 reviews so far. I get that it's supposed to prevent abuse but it's really annoying.

Absolutely! It's awesome to be able to look back to your previous experience with a beer while you are drinking it 2-3 years down the road. Maybe your palate has changed. Maybe some of the recipe has changed. But its a great way to keep track of what you thought about the beer as well as create a top 5-10 list that would otherwise be difficult to do.

My largest reason is to keep track of beers I've had/liked/disliked. But I would also like to think that I am contributing to the greater good of craft beer drinkers. I can't be the only one that sees a beer on the shelf that's interesting, looks it up on BA, and then weighs that into my decision whether to purchase it or not.

I look at it a little like Amazon; if hundreds or thousands of people have a good experience (review) with a product, they can't all be wrong!

I rate everything I drink but as others have said it is more of my log. I have a tough time figuring out what to give a score for look...all beers look good but I am not sure what makes a 2 vs a 5. I do like to write a short review but only when I am drinking in front of my computer otherwise to hard to write a review on my phone so I just do the assigned score. What I don't like is if for some reason a beer does not do it for me and I give a low score than BA insists I write a review.

I strictly review, because most beers that I believe warrant a rating are either pricey or hard to get, and reviewing them makes the experience that much better/warrants the search and cost!

I rate everything on untapped. The beers I rate on BA are the ones I wanna do a more in depth rating of.

I used a logbook back in the 90's to review and rate but it became too much of a chore to keep pace with my consumption. As such, I typically just rate now.

As papat444 said above - "less words, more enjoyment".

I try to rate everything that I have a 'sufficient' tasting of, for two main reasons. First, I like to keep a log of what I've had before and it helps to keep track of what I want next. I used to do this all in a word document, that later became an excel sheet, which is now more conveniently located on here (accessible by phone, tablet, computers, etc). Secondly, I get a lot out of the ratings from other users, so providing my own is a way to give back to the community and hopefully help others moving forward.

I haven't reviewed too many beers on here just yet. I've slowly gotten over the anxiety of doing so and have finally become comfortable doing so. That too fits both aforementioned categories of helping my memory in the future and potentially helping out a first time taster down the road.

    I am a rater.

    I enjoy rating because:
-when I was first getting into good beer I enjoyed reading ratings and reviews.
-I still will look at reviews when buying beer
-It really has helped me pick up on flavors and aromas in beer. The more I review the more practice I get. The more flavors I'm able to pick up on, the more I can enjoy
-Why try and remember if I liked something when I can just go back and check my profile page?
-It helps me when recommending beer for people, or when I'm involved in discussions regarding certain beers

I've never rated/reviewed any beer and have no interest.

My idea of enjoying a beer is sitting on the couch and doing one or more of the following: watching my kids play, conversing with my family, maybe watching a game during football season, but most of all, savoring the brew.

I have absolutely no desire to take notes while I'm drinking a beer. To me, that would entail work...the antithesis of the experience I want when enjoying beer.

I rate and review beers here on BA. I am currently closing in on the 1000 beer milestone with almost all of those as reviews (as opposed to simple numerical ratings).

I rate and review primarily for myself; should others find my reviews helpful, that is a bonus.

I like to keep my reviews short. I am very glad the 250 character limit was eliminated as I often found it a chore to write that much about certain beers. Not surprising, I tend to write more about beers I really like and sometimes I even write addenda to reviews.

My preference is to review a beer the same day I drink it so my memory is fresh. Often I get backlogged, so I keep detailed notes on my phone until I get a chance to sit and write reviews that are coherent.

Untappd is where I log ALL my beers.

I don't have many beers logged on BA because I only do reviews, and it usually takes me 15-20 minutes to do a proper review. I can't do it when I'm drinking socially ... it has to be just me and the beer, in a setting where I can grade the beer as fairly as possible.

This is my method only because it's how I feel I can best contribute to the site.

I'm a rater/reviewer, both here and on Untapped. I enjoy it, and like Hopsputin said above: "It really has helped me pick up on flavors and aromas in beer. The more I review the more practice I get. The more flavors I'm able to pick up on, the more I can enjoy."
