Fastenbier

    Today is the first day of lent, if my childhood Sunday school memories are correct, and that of course means fastenbier and doppelbock. I'm about to put in an order for a case of Schlenkerla's. I was also at Augustiner Muelln in Salzburg for the last few days of lent a couple years back and had my fill of their fastenbier(see avatar.) Aside from these though, along with Munich's doppelbocks, I'm not that familiar with many others.

    What will you be enjoying this lent?

    I was given a vague "mid-February" response when I asked my beer store over Facebook. I was there recently and no Fastenbier. Germany release is today, so I doubt the oversees release would be before then. I'll probably drive down to my beer store on Sunday to see what's what (they said that in addition to individual bottles, they will have a keg on tap!).

    Hmm. And that would have been last Saturday. :slight_frown:

    My local good beer store gets their shipments on Friday afternoon -- I'll be stopping in.

    Looking forward to the Fastenbier as well. I'll check with my local beer shop later this week.

    Let's hope it does! I received a shipment notification about 8 hours after I put the order in, but the whole process will surely slow down as soon as it hits the Italian border, so I can reasonably expect to have it Monday or Tuesday. Looking forward to it.

    When I asked, the proprietor looked at me very askance -- the I reminded him that he used to carry the Rauchbier. Still hadn't heard of the Fastenbier -- thanks to the local distros' apathy, no doubt.

    Checked in on my local-ish spot today and they said they had pre-ordered it way back when but still haven't received it yet.

    Received my case on Monday. Have had a couple bottles now. Very nice.
    My initial impression is that it naturally reminds me of the maerzen, with the fact that it's unfiltered giving it a much fuller mouthfeel. It's a rounder, softer beer than the maerzen, and lighter in color too.
    Once I get through a few more I'll have a more established opinion - I do have a case. For the moment I'm just enjoying it for what it is.

    Has anyone found this in the US? My local stocks 3 or 4 varieties but I've never seen Fastenbier

    You might want to ask them specifically about the Fastenbier. It was released in Germany on Feb. 18th, I haven't heard any reports of it making its way to the States yet.

    I looked at the website and it said only kegs come to the US...

    Paging HerrB - do you know of anywhere in NC or Ga that might have it on tap?

    That information might be outdated. This year was the first year that the Fastenbier has been bottled. FWIW, my local place said they are getting both a keg and bottles.

    It showed up here today. $4.59 per bottle. I reserved 4 bottles from a local retailer. Unlike most limited releases, there doesn't seem to be a run on these.

    Guess I'll be on the lookout for these now. I haven't seen any on the beer store FB pages yet, but we usually don't get any new beers until Thursday.

    One of my locals in Williamsburg, Va was supposed to get it in today, still waiting on the FB post. Thinking I may have blown a beer geek dog whistle, as I asked them publicly on their page about it. :wink: Hope I didn't screw myself on this one...

    I am in the exact same situation here, but I did not ask anything publicly! There was a post about "lots of new stuff in today" but nothing specific about the Fastenbier. I don't think I'll get there tonight, looks like I'll have to try tomorrow.
