The only place I would buy an IPA without a bottle on date is somewhere that is a no brainier, where you know it's fresh and something did not get fowled up before you buy it. Go somewhere like D&Q and you have no worries but to me all IPA's should have a date on them.

D & Q is where I normally go for fresh ipa

I've never had a problem with YR. But, I live in Northwest Houston, which is fairly close to Magnolia.

If it's off it's likely that it's old. Lone pint finally acknowledged that date stamping is necessary. They can say they bottle it every week all they want but anyone in Houston area know how our distributors are. They will be dating them soon so if you have an issue you'll know it's with the beer and not the storage!

Joey's right, and Houston-area distro's don't care about old IPA's like us beer nerds. Not sure that's it coming soon though...its when LP has the $ to purchase and install a real bottling line.

At the same time, I'm pretty sure that's it not just the bottle dating. Its QC issues.

I'll never understand why breweries don't bottle date or batch code, at the very least to be able to track any potential QC issues to a specific batch/bottling run

^ agreed...all I can think is that LP is a mom & pop type brewery that didn't expect the quick growth and consumer love for their beer

I'm pretty sure they said something about it happening soon on FB.

I noticed it too, mentioned it in the other YR thread. It's not "old" either. It's diacetylic and bitter, not old hops.

Agree with ya on it being bitter. Never knew what diacetyl tasted like...but I guess this is my first experience with it.

I haven't run into any bad YR yet... but I never buy the bottles... just drink it when I find it at Gordon STreet or Nobi... or anywhere else that has it.

i've had bad bottles of it, i've only had bad YR on tap once but it was still very drinkable.

It just didn't have the clarity and it didn't taste as vibrant/balanced as the YR i have had on tap/growler fills from other places.

This has always been me. I just bought my first three bottles that were four days old in the bottle shop so no telling how old they actually are coming from the distributors. Two for a trade partner, one for myself for quality assurance purposes after reading all of the off flavor posts as I don't want to send butter beer to someone. The bottle I opened is pretty on-point. Tastes and smells fresh like it's from the tap, fresher than some taps I've had even. I'm interested to see if anything changes on LPs end or if they will start printing and tracking batch numbers for QA. There has to be something going on with this many people talking about it.

Hey All, travelling out to Gruene Tx this week and am wondering if you can recommend some local outstanding IPAs that one could find in a local grocery store (or Whole Foods even).

I'll look out for this Yellow Rose, but is that something folks can typically find in a place like H-E-B? I think there's one in New Braunfels.

Any help would be AWESOME and greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks

Looks like this place has Yellow Rose on tap in New Braunfels, which is just a few minutes from Gruene:

Hops & Grain's Pale Mosaic and Real Ale's 20th Anniversary Rye IPA are two or my favorite local IPAs.

Yellow Rose has seemed to be in short supply as of late. Any update on the smaller format?
