My 5 year old son asks "what does beer taste like?"

It tastes like he needs a sip.

 

The answer really depends on the beer.

 

Apple juice? Ha ha. I only say this because one of my earliest memories( I might have been 5) is seeing my father drinking something that I thought looked like apple juice. I remember it, like it was yesterday, asking him "daddy daddy can I have some of your apple juice?" My father said yes with a mischievous smile. I drank it and spat it out immediately and watched him howl with laughter. It was, of course, alcohol. However, it wasn't beer, it was some kind of whisky. Anyway, your post triggered a funny memory. Thanks.

 

To a 5 year old ? "Son, it tastes like piss."

 

I'd answer: "Whatever the brewer wants it to taste like, son."

Honestly, I'm constantly amazed what we can get from barley, hops, yeast, water and the occasional additional ingredient. Beer can taste like almost anything.

 

stouts are like chocolate soda. but then he'll start stealing them from you.

I dunno. I'm a kraut, and definitely had my first sips of beer younger than 5. Give him a drop of a very hoppy/bitter beer at room temp and he'll leave beer alone for at least another decade.

 

The real question is:

How much beer a week do you drink in front of him?

Nectar of the Gods son! Actually I accidentally tasted one of my granddads beers when I was about that age and well...I am here now so it was obviously a profound experience. But I knew it was for adults, he didn't punish me but he did say its for adults and I understood.

 

I was about that age when I asked my mom the same thing. She let me have a sip and I, predictably, thought it tasted horrible. Interestingly, I can still remember what it tasted like, which is a taste I know love. So go ahead and let him have a sip. And don't worry about turning him into an alcoholic or anything, I only drink about 6 beers a night.
