    Yo:

So ive been hearing this word over and over again and its always been used in a negative connotation (as in; those damn beer nerds can never settle for what we have on tap; or those damn beer nerds come in and ransack the place when a new beer comes in leaving nothing for others)--- when I heard it. What is your interpretation of "Beer Nerd" and is it a negative or a positive statement to you?

Negative. I prefer "beer guru" or "aficionado."

    nerd [noun]
    1. an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially: one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits
    2. a person who behaves awkwardly around other people and usually has unstylish clothes, hair, etc.
    3. a person who is very interested in technical subjects, computers, etc.
Like many words, it depends on its use/context.

Beer nerd (or beer geek) is the friendly, more humorous name for most of us and less high-brow, douch-baggery term compared to several other descriptive title options. In conversion, I say beer nerd and my beer nerd friends and I usualy get a smirk or smile out of people as I'm talking. If you say "I'm meeting up with my beer advocates or beer aficionado friends", its sounds really snooty IMO and probably a lot more negative vibe to outsiders.

I have been called both a beer nerd and a beer snob. I do not take umbrage to either as I know what I like and that's what I drink. If someone feels the need to cast stones in my direction because I refuse to drink the same swill as them then so be it. Peasants!

See I dont see a need to make a new name for people who like craft beers! Why not just "Beer Drinkers". Sure certain beers take precedent over others in my book but the purpose of beer is to enjoy the taste and have a good time; correct? So the extra categorization creates a need to start discussing the aesthetics of the word itself. Opinions?

Using umbrage in a sentence will get some stones thrown for being a nerd in general, let alone one of the beer variety.

I thought being a nerd was cool now? Also, I'd rather be called a nerd than a light beer drinker.

Beer nerds are ok. They talk about beer not about how cool beer makes them.

I would say that it both depends on context and how the person behaves...the most knowledgeable among ust would probably be the hardest to identify until real, meaningful conversation was had...anybody who takes things too far and makes a show of it is usually a charlatan....

I've always taken it to mean the 3rd definition as beer "snob" covers unruly behaviour to other beer folk and douche describes all other poor behaviour. In my most haughty of opinions, I'd say anyone using the term in a derogatory manner are using it wrong.

I'd rather be around someone who just enjoys their beer and doesn't make a big deal about it.
It is, after all, only beer.

Beer nerd: someone who appreciates drinking craft beer and sees the art that goes into the product.
Beer snob: someone who spends their days threadshitting and comments on every newbies post telling them that their ratios are off and can't let someone get a better "deal" then they could. Also thinks beer belongs in a case in their showroom like a Mickey Mantle rookie card apposed to in their stomach.
