I've often thought about this with the realization it has evolved significantly over time. Some of my top 3 were part of my bottom 3 a few years ago.

Give your top 3 favorite beer styles and bottom 3 beer styles in order of favorite to least. Try to exclude extremely obscure beer styles in your bottom 3 like Sahti or Kvass.

    Top 3
    1. Double IPA
    2. Barley Wine (American or English)
    3. Tripel

    Bottom 3
    1. Amber / Red Ale
    2. Irish Dry Stout
    3. Black IPA

You really dislike ambers and black IPAs that much? Troegs Nugget Nectar? Founders Dark Penance?

Something has to be in your bottom 3. Dark Penance is the best black IPA I've had, but still not that great. I don't understand the point of this style. Completely contrasting tastes that don't go well together. Ambers/red ales are tricky. I love Blazing World and Hop Head Red, but everything else has been unappealing and honestly Blazing World is more of an outlier of the style. I have never had Nugget a Nectar; however, seeing reviews and opinions especially from west coast people I have a strong feeling it's over hyped.

The problem with west coast reviews on Nugget Nectar isn't that it's overhyped... it's that after 2-3 weeks, the flavor profile has already changed. It got distributed to us 5 days after bottling this year, and was life-altering. 2 weeks later, it had already significantly fallen off.

    this changes a lot but...
    top 3:
    1. Imperial IPA
    2. IPA
    3. Belgian quad

i dont really have bottom 3, but these are 3 i dont particularly seek out:
1: milk stouts ( taste good, but with some, the lactose makes me sick)
2: rauchbier ( I Love smoked meats, but dont love that level of smokiness in my beer)
3: enlgish dark mild ales ( never had one seem special to me)

    Top:
    1. Imperial stout/coffee stout
    2. IPA/DIPA/IIPA (when done well)
    3. Baltic porter

    Bottom:
    1. IPA/DIPA/IIPA (when done poorly)
    2. Lager
    3. Quad/Tripel

Of course, I can still appreciate lagers, tripels, and quads when they're done well, but I don't usually seek them out when I'm buying beer. And if you ask me this question a couple years from now, my list will probably be different.

This is part of a separate post and topic, but my opinion is for hoppy beers there is no reason to drink non-local. My local Las Vegas brewery that is so small and unknown only 2 of their beers are even listed on this site, I think their IPA because it is fresh would taste better than a 1 month old Heady Topper shipped across country in a hot truck. And I think their IPA is decent, run of the mill fare. Hoppy beers lose so much aroma and flavor in a quick period it just doesn't work to distribute them far from the brewery. Recently getting distribution of Founders and Bells I've noticed their non-hoppy beers stand up as quite good, but their hoppy beers that are so highly regarded taste quite poor. I attribute that to distribution. Trying hoppy beers out of your market only make sense when on a trip there. Otherwise don't even bother.

    Understandable.

Personally, judging by Dark Penance, I didn't think it tasted much like a IPA/stout hybrid at all. I thought it tasted like a stronger version of Sierra Nevada Flipside.

As for Nugget Nectar, it is a damn good beer, but it's so hop-forward it's more like an IPA than your typical amber.

    Love stouts, IPAs and sours.

Not a fan of sour stouts (go figure) and any beer named by it's color.
