Bad Trader: Cestlavie

    I was incredibly reluctant to create this; feels unpleasant to post a bad trader thread. I'm sure @cestlavie is a good dude but this has been ... painful.

    Up front I'll admit my mistake. I didn't use the feedback system. This was early on in my trading, I'd done one very solid trade with him, and I got swept up in the enthusiasm of "it's all about community" and wanting to establish regular trading partners. I realize in retrospect that I was forcing it. Mea culpa.

    Details. This "trade" happened almost a year ago. Yes. You read that correctly - close to a year. He expressed his love of De Garde, Ale Apothecary, Upright, asked if I could get a bunch of beers, and I obliged. For his part we casually agreed that we'd work it out, no need to specify; I hook him up, he'll hook me up. The box I sent was pretty solid: Peche n Brett, Fantasia, Ale Apothecary White Peach La Tache, and so on. Grand total was 14 beers, roughly $240 of goods, and probably about $40 of shipping.

    And time went by. I wasn't worried; I had his phone, we were facebook friends, etc. I messaged him after a few months and he "just had to get a few more beers" and then we'd be set. Eventually he stopped responding to texts and facebook messages. I asked a few BA folks about their experiences and one was kind enough to go after him and get him to respond. This was on December 7th. He said, again, just needed a bit more time to sort things out and was apologetic. Fool that I am I said "no problem - life happens - just keep me posted." His response: "I absolutely will." January 28th I message again. No response. February 10th, I message again. No response. February 13th and 16th I message asking if we're really going to go radio silent again? The 16th I got a response "I promise you by weeks end I will have a tracking number for you".

    You can see where this is going? At this point, I'm exhausted. The effort I put in to trusting that it would work out (trust takes a lot of restraint!) and then into trying to finalize has worn me down.

    I know he occasionally gets in trade conversations with folks on BA. Don't do it.

    Damn Ryan I'm sorry to hear this. You're as good of a trader as I've ever come across. Anyone dumb enough to fuck you over deserves to be called out, tarred and feathered.

    @cestlavie I've recently read some creative 'excuses' what's yours? Man up and send the beer you owe him.

    It sucks, reallly sucks, to trust someone & have that trust sucker punched. @cestlavie you're acting like a complete douche. Prove me wrong here (please!) & show that you will, however belatedly, come through & honor your word. You rec'd a very nice box & owed Kurmaraja a really nice box for a verrry long time. At this belated point in time you owe him a super terrific box +++. Seriously.

    I have made a trade with @Kurmaraja and he is 100% a stand up guy. I got into talks with @cestlavie and we had great communication for a week or two. We finally came to an agreement on the base trade and locked it up via the trade request system. We waited to ship to try to workout some small extras to make shipping worth it during this time communication fell off once or twice to the point I straight up told him I am going to want you to ship first since I have lost contact with you a few times and he agreed. Communication fell off again and he told me he was on vacation and working on packing up the box. I asked him to please hurry because I had just got engaged and wanted the King Henry that was agreed in our trade as a celebratory beer or to add it to a tasting I was going to do for my bachelor party. He got all excited and said he had to add something extra special since I got engaged. He again fell off the face of the earth for several months and I sent him a number of messages and even sent a message to him on facebook I think but no response there. After several months I gave up on the trade and considered myself lucky that I didnt get screwed as bad as @Kurmaraja but was disappointed to say the least because the trade involved several bottles I needed to help complete sets or verts. I wasnt going to start a thread because I wasnt out beer just out a really good trade but this thread had to be started by someone for sure.

    That really sucks, $240 is a lot of $ to be out! Hopefully someone knows @cestlavie and can get him to cough up the beer or $280.

    I've done one trade with Ryan (@Kurmaraja) and he's as fine of a BA as I've come across. What a rotten deal. Hope this guy makes it right and sends the promised beers and then some!

    FWIW, it appears that cestlavie works (or worked) for a beer distributor in New York.

    Its not worth much since he hasnt shipped promised beers but it just makes it worse because come on man you work for a beer distributor. That comes off bad after I read it but not sure how to reword it. No disrespect @Yohann

    He's historically been very good at ignoring me so I expect he'll just ignore this thread. My intention was just to make sure no one else gets taken for a ride.

    The irony that he works in beer distribution was not lost on me. I assumed that was a point in his favor, indicating that he was "part of the community." After all the discussion of distribution surrounding the inbev acquisitions of Elysian and 10 Barrel, I now realize not all beer distributors are created equal.

    of course, people in the industry may well have more to lose than just an account here. we'll be looking to up the ante for bad traders in the coming weeks. hopefully, @cestlavie responds.

    You should ask @cfh64 about the payback he got on a guy who tried to steal his beer. It didn't end well for the other party.
