The KBS thread got me thinking. So many people want KBS but very few are able to purchase a four pack at a good price. I'm fortunate enough to have purchased a ticket for their Saturday release. If it were not for the ease of purchase at their Saturday release, along with purchasing the beers at a good price, I would not hassle with KBS. Their are numerous Michigan breweries releasing great bba stouts these days. I've been able to purchase many great bba stouts in the last two years that I just don't feel compelled to put up with a lot of chasing around any more.

I was wondering how many ba folks have easy access to bba stouts within an hour or so where you live. Are other breweries around the country stepping up their game with bba stouts?

The best readily available for me would be Central Waters in Wisconsin, great stuff. Around GR? No good ones readily available unless you consider Dragons Milk good. It's not terrible but does not hold up against most.

What are the other great BB stouts you can easily acquire?

All of the Fremont Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts sit around on the shelves up here. Many of the annual Deschutes beers as well. Since this is a smaller city, many of the BA stouts are easier to find. Definitely, far easier than in San Diego.

These are the ones off the top of my head I can just go to the shop and pick up: CW BA Stout, Abita Bourbon St, Breckenridge BA 72, Dragon's Milk, The Abyss (funny enough), maybe BA Speedway, Big Bad Baptist, BA Boris and Doris, Alltech BA Stout, Weyerbacher Heresy.

As far as made in WI, CW's probably best bet, then Potosi (Templeton Slugger, on draft occasionally). I bet O'so still has some BANT lying around.

I had a growler of Foothills BBA stout last night (from Winston Salem NC). It's not a hard to get beer though it's unique in that it's only 7%. The base beer of it is pretty good but the BBA version is pretty awesome, again considering the ABV. I picked up a 32oz for only $7.49. Aside from that I can get Lindley Park and Event Horizon from Olde Hickory which are both highly regarded. BBA sexual chocolate is tough to get but that beer is super overpriced anyways.

We have parabola I guess but that see decent distro

No local ba stouts that really stand out.

I'm close enough to get the limited eclipse variations

Anchorage darkest hour, holy crap I can't mention that one enough. I was I picked up more bottles. This last batch was insanely good

Done with the KBS hype, been there done that. For our area: Fegley's Brewworks - Insidious BA Stout. When it comes to barrel aged stouts within an hour, they're way tougher to come by.

Other than the Fremont goods available here in North Idaho we have the Dog Father from Laughing Dog which is not bad for the price but is more like a oak aged stout kinda like old Viscosity but at $6.95 not bad at all. Next we have Ivan the Terrible from Big Sky Brewing Co in Missoula, Montana which I've not had the pleasure to try. I feel very luck to be in the Fremont distro!

I live an hour from Firestone Walker and it seems like their releases are always in stock at the brewery store; within a few weeks, of course. I would have to say that would be the closest great bba available beer.

I've preached this numerous times but I love most of Sun King's BA offerings. Timmie is my jam and I've not had a bad one by them yet. Plus I think they're one of two with a screw top pounder can which looks cool before you pour it!

Lots more small breweries in Iowa are doing some barrel aging, but not all bourbon barrel. Many Templeton Rye barrel aged ales and stouts out there also. Kalona, Big Grove, Peace Tree, Madhouse, Millstream, Lionsbridge, Rock Bottom, and others have put out some good barrel aged beers, mostly available on tap with a few bottled. We usually get the Abyss, New Holland, Central Waters, Founders, etc., which are somewhat available as well.

I think its funny that people almost get angry when it comes to KBS. Because they can't get it, they almost try to downplay it, like it is no good. While I will admit, there are better BA stouts, KBS is still a great beer. It does live up to the hype. It is a great beer. Everybody just needs to slow down a little bit and not get caught up into "Its old and I moved on to bigger and better things."

Anyway, great post OP. I often wondered this myself. Around Michigan, Anderson Valley's BA stout and Dragon's Milk are the only BA stouts I can find everywhere.

They are many good ones on the shelf now but they aren't hyped so they sit.

Regular BCBS is easy to get in Chicago around release... We see a lot of stuff in the winter. Some sells out immediately, some sits for a few weeks. Out of season you're pretty much stuck with Dragons Milk.

Griffin Claw's BBA Stout was mighty tasty for 2014 and the taproom is only a few miles from me.

Of course the BBA game seems to be expanding, and the distribution along with it. I would say a solid quarter to a third of my beer fridge and cellar are BA variants.

I agree with this statement. I tried two vintages, I liked 2013 a little better than 2014. 2014 was just a mess to me.

Sun King BA are not easy access. I went to Sun King for BA Timmie and Afternoon Delight. They sell out same day and never get distributed.
