I see that Surly now distributes to Iowa...what the hell Surly? How did Wisconsin get skipped over?
I'm really just venting here; I have family in Iowa so it's not like I'm never going to be able to get it, but it would be nice to be able to go to a bottle shop here and pick itup.

There was limited distribution in WI earlier this year.

You should ask them to run all their business decisions by you first.

If I were Surly I would go to Iowa before WI too as to not having to compete with NG.

Minnesota has a weird jealousy/inferiority complex with Wisconsin. Not so with Iowa.

So they're not distributing the one good thing they have to WI out of spite.

I once had someone in Hawaii ask me if us Wisconsinites really did consider ourselves "lesser Minnesotans" like he had always heard. That one totally surprised me as I had never heard anything remotely like that before. I asked him if that meant Minnesotans were lesser Canadians but got no answer.

I've lived in both states, and I wouldn't put it that way at all. There's certainly a great sports rivalry between the states (Vikings/Packers, Paul Bunyan's Axe, Badger/Gopher hockey, Twins and Brewers fans packing each other's stadiums every year for interleague play). The states have similar population sizes (Wisconsin is slightly larger), cultures, natural environments, and economic sectors, and they have equally bizarre political histories. Minnesota has a more educated, more urban, and wealthier population on average, but Wisconsin has a more favorable regulatory and tax environment for businesses, especially when it comes to beer. The Twin Cities metro area is twice the size of the Milwaukee metro area with cultural amenities and job opportunities to match, and thus Minnesota draws more residents from Wisconsin than Wisconsin does from Minnesota, but Minnesota lacks any city comparable to Madison. For sure there is a rivalry, but there's no inferiority complex on either side, except perhaps on an issue-by-issue basis.

When it comes to beer perhaps, but the rest of your sentence is a quote from the Walker handbook. Any stats about how the two states have grown in various ways since the recession started favor Minnesota...handily. :stuck_out_tongue:

Although Duluth is much smaller, I'd say it's kinda Madison-y.

I wasn't trying to get into partisan politics, especially between Walker and Dayton, who are mere temporary office holders who have made ultimately small impacts on this issue. Any entrepreneur generally is going to favor a regulatory system in which he faces less red tape, fewer restrictions on his activities, less expensive compliance requirements, lower fees, and relinquishes a lower proportion of his profits in taxes, ceteris paribus. Minnesota has its Border Cities Enterprise Zone program on cities bordering the Dakotas for this very reason, or else most businesses gradually would move across the border or be unable to compete with those already located there. http://mn.gov/deed/business/financing-business/tax-credits/border-cities/

One can argue that the consequences of those regulations and taxes raises the quality of life and citizenry to the point that all else is not equal, and thus the businesses could be better off on the net despite more burdensome regulation and taxation. And of course much regulation has the intent and/or effect of protecting existing businesses from competition by upstarts, and those existing business often support such regulation for that reason.

I would tend to argue that the already wealthy and well educated population in the Twin Cities area is an enormous attraction for businesses that acts as a counter to the regulatory and tax burdens that the state has placed, and, again, one can make a case that such a favorable labor pool would not be present if not for the high regulatory and tax burden (one can make the opposite case as well). The key thing is that a business that is debating between the two states for its location generally will view the regulatory and tax environment as a plus for Wisconsin and the labor pool as a plus for Minnesota (at least in the Twin Cities area), even if they may be intertwined (and, in my previous post, I did mention Minnesota's advantage in that respect).

We're off topic here. When in the world is Surly coming to Wisconsin!?!?!? I did hear that they hired a brand rep for Wisconsin, so you know it's close. I am looking forward to having some Furious in my fridge on the regular.

I also lived in both states. But why acknowledge the obvious when I can score some quick points with the Wisconsinites? :grinning:

I was deeply disappointed with the WI vs MN comparisons... Came in here hoping for a State X vs Jersey dumping on.
I expected more from you guys... smh.

On topic, was hoping for some fresh Abrasive to kick off the new distro, but maybe next year.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for some Coffee Bender later in the year.

Yeah I mainly started this just to vent. My brother in Iowa texted me a picture of all of the Surly on the shelf down there, and it made me wonder why they skipped over Wisconsin to go to Iowa. All that political mumbo jumbo was not my doing.
