I can't quite describe it, but I like to call it "the point"--the point being where I no longer want to take a chance on trying a new beer, but instead just enjoy those that I've tried and liked in the past.

So...what percentage of your purchases are new beers vs. beers you've tried and liked?

Because I'm still in my first year with craft beer I am constantly trying new beers.
I'd say I'm at about 98% new beers.
Next year though I'm sure I'll revisit a lot of my favorite seasonal beers such as Ten Fidy and I'll buy any Three Floyds I see.

I sparingly pick up old favorites these days as there always seems to be something new on the shelf that I'm excited about trying. It's a great time to be a craft beer drinker, just so much great beer in varied styles out there to try. I would say 33% old favorites vs. The rest new beers.

I split my time (and money, and liver function) between standard, "daily drinker" beers and new and unusual ones.
I keep 12 pks / cases of regular things like Torpedo, Jack's Abby, and so on for regular, and keep plenty of bombers / 750s around and routinely get new stuff to mix in.

In the early years I wanted to try as many beers as possible and then I slowly started reaching "the point." I would buy the beer for the sake of trying something new. Now, most of my new selections are beers that I seek out or know I will enjoy. I still try new beers consistently but I find myself going to old favorites more and more.

I hope to never reach such a point. Would guess that my divide is about 60/40(ish), favoring established favorites.

No way, man. Still finding plenty of stunning new beers all the time.

You gotta increase your overall volume to accommodate your faves and new beers :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm drinking craft since the summer of 2010, and I'd say I'm probably drinking about 60-65% familiar and 35-40% new now, and a lotta that is probably more indicative of the amount of new beers being released/getting new distribution to my area, weighed against amazing beers I return to as they come around again each year...

...and having some faint semblance of moderation that keeps my liver (and wallet) from floating down the river... :grinning:

I think I have nearly reached "the point" but that may be due to living too close to Toppling Goliath & having another great bar in The Cellar & Courtyard to drink most Prairie releases, & then a 40 minute drive to Wisconsin to get New Glarus. I have also been amazing underwhelmed by some old Surely Favorites finally making there way to Iowa this week

I will definitely give preference to the new beer if I can easily buy it at the store or get it at a bar. I have noticed recently though Im getting sick of the hype behind trying to get all the whales, and spending a outrageous amount of money on them. In that regard I guess id rather revisit some of my favorites instead.

A big fat NO! With over 35 years of trying new beers under my belt, it's a rush, sorta. Ya know, there's even a BA forum for new beer fun. New Beer Sunday is worth a look. I look forward to chiming in when I can.

it would depend on the price of said new beer. Usually new is what I look for unless there is a great old favorite available I haven't had in some time.

Right- I'm at like 2/3rds favorites that I look forward to. Plus there is the way I look at the new beers I try- they are being 'auditioned' to be added to the ever growing stable of faves .

I am reaching the point where I know what I really like and revisiting those items with greater frequency. That said, I do like trying new beers in search of that elusive 5.

Not really, but being a PA guy buying by the case is the cheapest option and I have learned my lesson on buying untried cases. That being said our six pack options have really increased in the last few years and selection of great mid Atlantic breweries leads me to try more lately that I ever did years ago.

Well, as a salty veteran of almost 2 years , more and more do I reach for my go-to beers. I've done a lot of ticking in the last few years, so I have a very good idea of what suits my fancy. At this point, much like delicious ground beef, I'd say the ratio is about 80%:20% had:new.

I do a beer night with friends every other week and we are always trying something new alongside something established and well-liked.

Doing research before buying something new pays off. I know the styles I like, my go to breweries, respected breweries etc. Therefore I will always try new beers that have solid ratings vs. blindly buying something just because I haven't had it yet. So far it's worked really well.

Sometimes if the price is right I'll take a chance on something new, be it from another country or a brewery I've never heard of before, and if it sucks at least I'll know and won't be too much out of pocket. Even if it sucks it's still better than a Bud or Coors light so it's always a win win to me.

I divide my time pretty equally between new beers and old favorites.
