Just saw a FB post from Bale Breaker that they are releasing a third year-round brew, Bottom Cutter. An ImpIPA that comes in at 8.2% and 100 IBUs. Looking forward to trying it.

This gonna be out and about theoretically the same places as Topcutter/Field 41?

from facebook: Initially, Bottomcutter will be draft only, but we're planning on it being the next beer released in cans. Can design is in process... Stay tuned!

This can't hit canned distro soon enough. If it's anything like Kiln Series 2 that I had back in September it'll be the best double IPA coming out of WA.

Or, if it's anywhere near Piled Higher.

maybe i'm reading way too much into ABVs, but if it clocks in at 8.1%, and their last two kiln series (02 and 03) were both right there at 8.2% and 8.1%, respectively, i'm guessing this isn't far off from those two beers.

kiln 03 is on at the sixgill for those of you who are interested.

Yep, that was my line of thinking when I saw the ABV, and my reasoning behind what I said.

They could have gotten a little more creative with the name.

It's named after hop harvesting equipment. Fits in with the Topcutter.

Since the folks who own the brewery are hop farmers, indeed, even going to the point of carving a chunk of land right out of a producing hop field in which to site their brewery, going with Bottomcutter makes great sense. It stays within the theme they've built for the mainline brews they've made so far. Not so hypothetical statement around harvest time: " We need to get a Topcutter and a Bottomcutter into Field 41 for the harvest tomorrow." Plus, there's still room for the truck that the bines get placed into. And, lots more farm and processing equipment to name future beers after.

I gotta agreee with @SeaAle that it's too similar. I get the theme: Kiln, Top Cutter, Field 41, etc. But I think it's a good thing when the name conveys some meaning as well or at least is distinct from the others. Even given the names Top Cutter and Bottom Cutter ... which one is the IPA and which the IIPA? I know the answer, obviously, but couldn't I accidentally think Top is the IIPA since top is higher than bottom?

It's certainly no big deal but being a marketing guy I do always look at names through that lens.

This whole last naming bit made me immediately think of this:

As a consumer though, I like it. I have several friends who graphics/design folks, and it often amuses me to listen to them critique a label, sign, whatever. They get so involved in the details, they don't see the whole. I think it's similar with Bale Breaker's naming. It reinforces the fact that they're a hoppy brewery. Simple, straight forward, understandable. I approve.
