I drank a 831 IPA from Sante Adairius this weekend, and realized that I had a visceral reaction to watching it be poured and seeing a cloudy, hazy orange beer come out, rather than the clear, golden amber color more typical of IPAs. I've heard people refer to cloudiness as a negative when rating these beers with regards to appearance, and it could just be an association thing (ie a lot of really fantastic, rare IPAs like Heady or SoS are cloudy), but I've come to love IPAs that look this way. Thoughts?

I absolutely love the cloudy/hazy look and prefer it to the clearer amber of a lot of IPAs. The vast majority of my favorite IPAs taste-wise are also the haziest (Congress Street, Julius, Heady, etc.)

I'm all about that cloud, bout that cloud, no filter!

Long Trail's India Pale Ale is vastly improved since they made it unfiltered, imho.

I prefer my IPAs and IIPAs to be cloudy.

I can see someone being put off by the yeast and sediment floating around in the beer, but to me the cloudiness adds character. For this reason, I really like how some breweries (namely, Bell's) don't filter any of their beers. Less isinglass the better, for this BA.

Cloudy is a plus for a nice, fresh DIPA IMO

I totally agree, Some of my favorite IPAs and DIPAs almost look like OJ, I love the unfiltered cloudy look to my hoppy beers.

Lack of a hot break and a cold break during work boiling and cooling can cause haziness but this is usually more a problem with home brewers than commercial brewers.

Chill haze can result if the beer is served too cold - let it warm to serving temperature and the beer should clear.

Suspended hop particles are one cause of cloudiness in beer and this is especially so if the brewer has dry hopped the beer. Suspended yeast particles also cause cloudiness. The brewer can reduce these by cooling the beer down and letting it sit a spell but some brewers believe that this can impact taste. In most Imperial IPA the cloudiness is usually from the hops and it is part of the joy of drinking that style of beer.

I am also in the camp that loves the really hazy and juicy IPA/DIPAs.

All IPAs start "cloudy". Its grain particulate suspended in the solution. Many breweries use a clarifier (gelatin) to pull the particulates out, but some don't. Some do it sometimes but not others for the same beer, Pseudo Sue comes to mind. I prefer cloudy pales, IPAs, and doubles also.

Yeah, I feel like the IPAs and DIPAs that I've had that are more 'cloudy' than the clear ones tend to have a better feel. I think it's subconscious, but I always think they're thicker and packed with more flavor.

Unfiltered does not mean the beer should look cloudy or look like a milkshake with particulates floating around.

Had this one last night ... some mild haze which mostly went away after a warmed up a bit.

Some breweries retain unfiltered beer (no clarifiers) but still put the beer through a mechanical seperator i.e. centerfuge.

the cloudier the better. i don't want to look through a beer and see anything out of the other side of the glass. if california drinkers rate a beer's appearance a 2, that's what I'm looking for.

    like so

I don't mind it either way. Clear or cloudy, the proof is in the palate.

Fined fine, hazy fine, cloudy probably not fine although it depends, soup-like; just no.

An IPA should not be cloudy like a hefeweizen. Once you put enough hop oils in a beer you can't avoid a hazy appearance.
