I was surprised to see Sierra Nevada and Anderson Valley missing from here. Doesn't Anderson Valley promote that they use Solar Power on their bottle caps?

Yeah, there must be some behind-the-scenes political bickering that accounts for that.

I wish it would have been "24 Breweries Join Call to Action on Environmental Awareness" or something. I'm all for companies being environmentally friendly and whatnot but despise hearing about global warming/climate change. Its become more about politics than reality.

Oh and despite their associations, does this make Kona, Widmer, and Redhook less "evil" or whatever?

I will not by beer from any of those breweries anymore, which does not pain me, because they are all pretty much junk anyway.

Serious question, not trying to cause a political dust-up here - what term do you think is better or less politically charged? I generally think it's good to use the least charged language, helps keep the broadest group of people in the conversation.

I ask because I thought "Climate Change" was the current favored neutral term (with "Global Warming" having been rendered too politically charged) since it doesn't necessitate acceptance of human-induced global warming. Surveys show the majority of registered republicans (voters, not politicians) believe climate change is occurring (when questioned with no implication either way as to whether this is human-induced), and of course democrats (broadly speaking) feel the same way. Obviously that means some people still don't believe, but I thought "Climate Change" was a politically neutral, inclusive term to reflect the beliefs of the majority of all voters.

    • Measuring their greenhouse gas emissions. Deschutes Brewery was the first craft brewery to operate by the Global Reporting Initiative standards and make its carbon footprint publicly available. New Belgium Brewing has completed a full life-cycle analysis on its most popular Fat Tire beer.
    • Using renewable energy. Allagash Brewery, Brewery Vivant, Deschutes Brewery, Odell Brewing, Redhook and Widmer Brothers use 100 percent renewable energy to generate electricity. New Belgium Brewing, Ninkasi Brewing and Kona Brewing Company have installed on-site solar arrays. Kona Brewing sources 50 percent of its electricity needs with a 645 kWh roof-top solar array.
    • Cutting energy use by recycling steam. Fremont Brewing and Odell Brewing capture steam from the brewing process and use it for heat.
    • Capturing methane. New Belgium Brewery and Smuttynose Brewery capture methane – a byproduct of their wastewater treatment process and a potent greenhouse gas – and use it to generate electricity. The captured methane provides New Belgium with 15 percent of the brewery’s electricity needs.
    • Cutting transportation emissions. Many breweries are cutting their transportation footprints by reducing packaging and choosing cans to lighten their loads. Guinness has partnered with the US EPA Smartways program that works with transportation carriers to reduce carbon emissions through better logistics.
    • Becoming LEED Certified Brewery Vivant became the first LEED-certified brewery in the United States in 2012, employing high-efficiency heating and cooling units. Smuttynose Brewing recently opened a LEED-gold certified pub in New Hampshire with LED on-demand lighting systems.

While I acknowledge the existence of climate change support taking action to fight it, this seems more like marketing to me

Yeah they were doing all of this before this "call to action". Now they are just advertising that they are green.

To clarify, the call to action is directed at policymakers to seize the economic opportunity of tackling climate change with hopes that private business support will lead to policy changes.

That said, there is definitely some self PR/Marketing/Communication involved to promote what each brewery has been doing.

True, but as is often said on this site, brewing is a business. I have no problem with brewers highlighting the positive steps they are taking, maybe it will encourage others to do the same.

I am in no way against it either, I just wanted to make it clear that this is a business move, too
