Why is it that with every TG release everyone throws their first born+ At it to land?

Is the hype train in full force for TG?

I've had the big names from them. It's all fantastic stuff, but not worth what people put up FT for it.

Am I on an island here?

You aren't on an island. I'm sure they are amazing beers, but I would rather drink 4 - 8 awesome beers over a 12oz bottle any day of the week

I feel like if I had to ammo to land one I wouldn't even try. I feel like there is so much hype that I would let myself down trading away the farm for a single bottle.

I've had most of their IPA's, Morning Delight, and Assassin. They were all phenomenal... MD was probably the best non BA stout I've ever had. But there is no way that I'd give up what is required to land a KBBS, just my .02...

There is a middle ground. Yes, their beers are mostly mind-blowing. It is what it is. This is as someone that has never gotten his hands on one of the rare ones nor do I have the ammo to get one. I have been lucky to have tastes of MD, Assassin, and King Sue. They are, frankly, amazing. Does that mean it is worth what people trade? That's up to you. I was lucky to be at TG early on and they had a keg of Mornin' Delight. This was before the hype train blew up. Single best beer I've ever had. It just was that good.

I personally feel that they have some great beers, but they are all about the hype train. Full steam ahead, choo choo!

I think it is ridiculous what their limited releases are fetching and this is being on both sides of it now.

But it is what it is, I don't see it changing for rare beer anytime soon. If someone wants it and he the means, they 're going to throw stuff at it to get it.

However, I am interested to see how far TG can ride the hype train now with their head brewer gone and if they will sink or swim.

I agree with both the "yes" and "no" responses in this poll. I've had KBBS, and I would put it in my top-3 favorite stouts I've tried. There's no doubt their beers are world class and mind-blowing. But I also wouldn't give up what it takes to trade for their stouts. It just isn't worth giving up multiple world class beers for one world class beer.

Not every beer I have had from them has been amazing. I didn't think that even half of their beer was amazing. Golden Nugget, Light Speed, Zeelander, Dorothy's and a few others were just decent/good for the style. But beers like Psuedo, King Sue, MD, KBBS, Assassin are worth some hype. Not these levels to which we are seeing, but its definitely worth some hype.

You're forgetting the one undeniable truth of BeerAdvocate. If it's rare, it tastes better, and you're a bigger man for acquiring one.

I've had a lot of TG and the only beer I wasn't impressed with was regular golden nugget (imperial version is extremely good). So I don't think it's just hype. Is it worth what you have to trade for it, for the most part I'd say yes. Their stouts are the only beers that trade high, and I'd say that they deserve the hype they get. They are amazing.

I can't think of another brewery (personally) that constantly delivers like TG does.

This is an odd question, because this isn't TG's fault or doing. Therefore calling them the hype train implies almost something deragatory towards them. At least, TG can say their bottles are limited and they're in the middle of fuckin nowhere- I mean c'mon, no offense here, but there can't be a ton of people living on the Minnesota/Iowa border. Furthermore, they aren't any more hype train than Heady Topper (DBH, Prop, any JK Sour etc, etc) in that case. Hell, Heady comes out weekly, have you seen what people post for the #1 beer in the world (OMG!!!!!!!!!!)

I think you should add another option- we as beer chasers are the hype train. Don't blame TG (or Alchemist calm down NE, AB in-bev, CCB, JK) for jumpin' on for a free ride.

Haven't had any stouts yet, however, their APA/IPA lineup is as good as anything out there. I've had pseudosue, sol hunter, light speed, David, Sosus, and King Sue.

The last 3 I mentioned are AS GOOD AS ANY DIPA out there, bar none, hell better than almost any of them IMO. (and I've had all the heavyweights).

How many breweries are out there that have 3-4 PERFECT DIPAS? Very few, sayeth I.

I had to vote in favor of the hype train based on what I've been able to try. I've had Psuedo Sue, Imperial Golden Nugget, and Rover Truck, and while Psuedo Sue and Imp Golden Nugget were good neither were mind blowing. I feel there are many Ipas/dipas out there that are easier to obtain and are much better. As for Rover Truck, well that one was mediocre at best, so in my mind why should I throw everything I have at a stout made by a brewery that can't even produce a decent oatmeal stout. Just my opinion of course, cheers everyone!

A third option would be some of their beers are really good, some are less so.

Part of the problem, and it doesn't only apply to TG or their beers, is when saying a beer is mind-blowing the rater can only compare it to beers they've had in the past.

So Joe Homie says OMZG! BEST BEER I'VE EVER HAD!.

Now maybe Mr. homie is lying and driving the hype train, or maybe all Mr. Homie has ever had before is bud light. So compared to bud light this IS the best beer he's ever had.

And maybe Joe cicerone, who has had the top 1,000 beers in the world, drinks the same beer and says....eh. it's good, but nothing I haven't had before.

An extreme example but how you rate the beer is largely dependant on how often you've had the opportunity to drink truly great beer.

I had the chance to try CBS a few weeks back on tap. I was like, eh. It's good, but nothing all that special.

    Anyway,.........

Couldn't be more right. You drive through bluffs and farmlands in any direction to get to Decorah. But, people make that drive from the Twin Cities, Des Moines, Chicago, South Dakota, etc.

And they do that because the beer is good. It's as good as any beer around in those styles. Probably better.

They make mostly amazing stouts, I've had Assassin 14' wasn't that impressed. I had kbbs and was blown away. Never had mornin' delight.

I'd def trade for it, but only when its within 2 years. I do agree that people want way too much for it.

C'mon what else do they have in Iowa to trade? They finally got some decent beer and now they want IN to the game.

Their hoppy beers are great, and their stouts are some of the best in the country. Their hoppy beers are easy to trade for except King Sue, and are mostly available distribution in IA and WI. Not the case for their stouts, which is due to the low bottle counts and mostly brewery only releases. Des Moines and MPLS/St Paul are the two closest and most populated areas to TG and that's a 3 hour drive one way. Also the last few stouts releases, they give you very little info when its going to be released, so most people can't drop everything to make a 6+ hour
