I am a (relative) new trying to explore different styles. Since its been winter, I have been focusing on American Stouts and Porters (also cause I really like them) But spring is in the air, I am ready to move up the ladder to lighter styles. I think (based on previous discussion) American Brown ales are next. I would like one or two that are good, typical of the style (not some odd adjunct, nor a high IBU level better suited to a different style) fairly easy to find (I am in Northern Virginia) and not too expensive. Your suggestions are appreciated.

"Just forget it and move directly to red/amber ales" is also an acceptable suggestion.

Abita Turbo Dog should be readily available. Smutty's might be, but I can't recall for sure.
Indian Brown and Palo Santo are top notch. Avery's Ellie's Brown's another.

Surly Bender or Indian Brown by DFH (which might be easier for you to find in Virginia).

A lot of great suggestions have already been made, but I'll just add Samuel Smith's Nut brown Ale in there as well.

Pet peeve time (and this is not directed specifically at the op)- can we please stop referring to flavorings as adjuncts? Thank you, and carry on...

My go-to browns tend to be:

    Pretty Things Saint Botolph's Town
    Anchor Brekle's Brown
    Smuttynose Old Brown Dog
(and though it was a seasonal and now only appears in the autumn mix pack, Sierra Nevada Tumbler)

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale is one of the best I've had. It's definitely my go-to if I'm looking for a brown ale. Love Palo Santo as well but I don't think it's a good example of the style.
