I was just wondering on others opinions on the etiquette of trading and extras. Specifically an extra that is contrary to everything ur trading. When someone throws in an extra that is a different style from the trade and/or the extra(s) are quite dated, do u consider this a true gift or is it an insult? Is this like re-gifting XMAS gifts or should u never look a gift horse in the mouth? Just wondering…..

Let your conscience be your guide. I've received extras that blew my mind and old ass IPAs. I would rather blow someones mind than be "that guy." If I can send a guy his first Zombie Dust or anything from his Wants list then I'm happy to do so.

I don't mind. It's how I came to really start liking gose even though I'm a huge stout and porter fan. Even old IPAs can be interesting to me, helps me gauge how different beers evolve and devolve without having to risk my personal stash.

I'm certainly happier with killer extras, but extras are just that, extra, so not really fair to complain about them IMO.

A member on here sent me a couple of Pliny as I never had any. I had fun finding and sending a nice Eastern coast porch bomb in return after being told nothing needed in return . I don't want or expect anything back but his kind jesture to send initial box was awesome . So yes, he enjoyed " extras" and I enjoyed paying it forward.

I usually try to include a want list item if I have it. Or just something local under the radar that they can't get.

I'm grateful for any extras, because that's what they are... "Extra". There's no rule that they have to be included at all, so it's always nice to get them!

I usually try and hit a want list item. If not, I send the best local stuff I have access to based on what I think their flavor is from conversations or wanted lists. Some of my favorite beers that I've had have been extras in trades.

Anyone who complains about any extra is an asshole.

Even if it's a five year old Bud Light, what do you care? At the absolute most you will have to open the bottle, dump it down the drain and then throw the bottle in the recycling bin. Oh the horror. But I know, discarding a bottle isn't what gets people upset about crappy extras. People get upset about crappy extras because they feel entitled to good extras and then got let down. Thus my initial point of people that complain about extras being assholes is reinforced.

I like to add extras, sometimes 2 and never really expect them in return. I like to throw in those killer extras that no one expects. For example, just sent out a box to a trader i have made a few trades with. He thought he was just getting sip of sunshine, i threw a lusciuos in the box and a gandhi-bot glass.

Just send the best extras you can...look up your traders want list and go from there...Karma rules the world.

Ygtbfsm. Nobody wants shitty extras -- old beers or just plain lousy beers. I've received all types of extras -- generally pretty impressive w the occasional turd. Send a fresh beer or don't send em at all.

I would like to include beers from wants, but I don't usually get that opportunity.

If that fails I really try to get them something good locally they've never had before. I feel like half the fun of trading is trying something new that you may not be familiar with.

Generally speaking, I subscribe to the extras are extra, and anything is appreciated school of thought. That' being said, if you're extra'ing 6 month old IPAs, I can't help but think you're kind of a douche.

Anyone who sends a dated IPA is clearing out their fridge of crap they aren't going to drink and there is nothing sincere in that gesture.

...says the poster who doesn't trade.

Perhaps the other person thought the "turd" was actually pretty good and that you might enjoy it....

What about when you send a box full of great extras and your partner receives it before they send their box out, and then they reciprocate with a Sixpoint Rad and a bottle of crappy extract homebrew? I'm a dick for being disappointed?

Yes. If they are extras. Or maybe you're not an asshole but just don't understand the concept of what an extra is. It's literally an extra.

Yes I understand the concept of "extras". But let's turn the tables and say you received a Prop or something else really great as an extra one day. You wouldn't feel at all weird reciprocating with just a Ten FIDY and a PT5? What the hell it's all just extra right?

I can understand when both boxes are in transit at the same time, but to get good extras and then send bad ones is a dick move.

Personally, I like to drop in extras of beers I am enjoying at the moment that I doubt the person has tried. Local fresh IPAs. Stuff I know to be outside of the market I am trading to. Odd things that the person might not normally try but that I think are good. My rule of thumb is to never include something I would not want to drink.

Very interesting feedback. thanks. I think fredmugs has it right "Let your conscience be your guide" and if u are sincerely sending an extra that u feel is interesting and will be enjoyed by ur trading partner then its a very nice gesture. If, conversely, ur only purpose in sending an extra is to clear ur "C" beers out of ur fridge, then one needs to take a good look in the mirror.
