Wow, something seems off here... Why would he do that? Things are going downhill fast

Guess it's all but confirmed that Regifter is what was supposed to be King Sue. That explains the rush to get SR71 to market as well. The real test is going to be seeing if they can brew their beers from start to finish by themselves. It's a lot harder if you have a tank of beer that you're not sure exactly what has and hasn't been done to it yet.

Fwiw I agree with all of the guesses that this isn't assassin, where I thought assassin was a giant double fudge chocolate brownie of a beer, SR71 was tons of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee to me. If it's the same beer then Mike only picked the barrels that were milk chocolate for assassin and left the coffee type barrels for this beer. Also I was in the taproom when it first opened and asked Clarke if there was a difference in the two colors of wax and he said no there is no difference just leftover wax from kbbs and assassin

I wasn't a huge fan of Regifter...thought it was average..so I agree, the question is can they duplicate their old recipes with the same quality and consistency...and can they make the same quality stouts going forward <--- biggest question mark

I still think Mike should open up a new brewery on his own and just make crazy good barrel aged beers like Cory King did in the STL

The guesses are wrong. It's assassin. It's the exact same beer.

Have you had both? They taste nothing alike, if they are the exact same beer then an extra few months in a barrel made them so different you wouldn't ever recognize them that way.

Yes, I have, and I know they don't taste the same. But I can absolutely guarantee that beer started as assassin.

Same base beer undoubtedly, but that doesn't mean anything.

Sometimes beer develops undesirable "off" flavors during the barrel aging process. Smoke flavors, burnt flavors, whatever...thats why they taste the barrels before blending them; to pull out the bad ones. Sometimes they have to taste dozens or hundreds of barrels (KBS, BBPt5, etc).

Some breweries dump beer with off flavors after barrel aging, others rename it into a "new" beer.

You've posted this in multiple threads now claiming that it's "off" tasting or rejected barrels.. You keep speaking from a position of authority like you're certain of it and it couldn't be anything else - do you mind backing up your claim with the name of your source or a link to an interview where Mike discusses it or something?

Maybe it's just because I'm new here but I dont recognize you, maybe you work at TG or something?

Or maybe he's telling the absolute truth and doesn't need to source anything.

Also, LOL at you saying "back it up with a source or it isn't true."

    I mean, seriously. LOL.

If the flavor of off is sr71 I hope more breweries start releasing their off barrels.

I'm just saying he keeps posting it, he must have some knowledge on it.. He's called the flavor "off" in multiple threads but no one who has drank it has said anything about off flavors. Reviews have started rolling in and most say "better than assassin" not "off flavored assassin".

I'm sorry I try not to sprout rumors on the internet Ivan_drago.. I'll do better..

HEY GUYS, DID YOU HEAR THAT MIKE AND CLARK JUST STAGED THIS BREAKUP AS A PUBLICITY STUNT AND THEY WILL BE RECONCILING AS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE? Don't ask me how I know, just believe me that it's true.

If ReGifter is failed attempt at a new batch of King Sue, then why did Clark say on Twitter last week/eariler this week that a new batch of King Sue would be ready soon? Then again, it makes sense if they are indeed no longer going to serve King Sue at Hunaphu Day. If it is indeed a failed batch of King Sue, they are clearly missing Mike's talents already, as the massive dry hopping needed for King Sue was probably a technique he only knew himself.

What about this...what if the initial release of Gold Wax Assassin was meant to be kept in barrels longer to develop the desired flavors? What if Assassin was rushed into bottles and these leftover barrels were intended for something else? Lastly, what if they replaced Mornin Delight with Dorothy's for Hunahpus Day?

Certainly he wouldn't lie to us would he?

I don't think he'd intentionally lie. I'm now starting to buy the idea that ReGifter was intended to be the next batch of King Sue, so when he tweeted that King Sue would be ready soon, he didn't realize it wouldn't taste like King Sue when they went to bottle/keg it. So they decided to call it a "brand new DIPA" that will be a taproom only release, ala ReGifter.

Then again, he also said last week that SR-71 wouldn't be released on Monday or Tuesday, and then it was released on Tuesday. So who knows.

I'd be willing to bet that the King Sue/ReGifter issue is the same type that led to Mike leaving, if not the straw that broke the camel's back. If it was intended to be King Sue and something happened during fermentation led to it not being up to the brewer's standards, the brewer probably wanted to dump it (ala DogFish Head's infamous dump of 120 minute a few years back) or not release it. The owner, looking at the bottom line, profits, and making payroll didn't want to watch that kind of invested money pour down the drain and wanted to rename and sell it anyways (at $30/growler) - I mean, just look at the name - "Re Gifter". This is what often happens when talented brewers are up and coming, once they get the pedigree, the move on to do their own thing. It's all eerily reminiscent of David Sakolsky and Blue Lobster, even down to the bad blood playing out in public.
