I might have to trade for this $4$. Sounds like I will like this more than KBS...which I didn't see being a World Class offering.

Finally back with the “experiment” I promised (or threatened) in my earlier post.

I went with an honorary member of the “Animal Beer” fraternity. The animated bear of this brand’s old TV ads does not make an appearance on the can, but is forever linked to this brand in my mind. Yep, from the land of sky blue waters (which is apparently Milwaukee these days) it’s Hamm’s :

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/320/870/?ba=woemad

Better than I feared, but that’s about the best thing that can be said, besides it’s cost.

How to wash that from my mouth? Why, a local rye saison aged in even more local rye whiskey barrels, of course:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28798/158182/?ba=woemad

Merely quite tasty rather than a world-beater, but it takes on added luster when compared to what I had before. This is the first of Selkirk Abbey’s barrel-aged beers to be bottled, and I look forward to trying others from them in the future.

Howdy NBS crowd! A bit late to the party after a busy weekend. Reviewing a Christmas gift from my sister. A cork and caged 750ml from Brewery Ommegang by the name of Gnomegang with a 9.5abv.

Pours a brilliant but hazy gold complete with floaties, and a soapy white finger of white foam.

Aroma is bready yeast with a hint of grape and green apple.

The flavor is fruity and white wine like. I'm getting grape, green apple, and biscuit in the finish. There is a hint of clove and pepper as well from the yeast. Nice array of favors that play well off each other.

Mouthfeel is champagne like with a dry finish.

Now for my two cents. A very pleasing take on a Belgian Blonde. A nice balance of flavors and quite quaffable for a beer weighing in at 9.5. I drank a ton of Ommegang Abbey Ale back in the day, and this may motivate me to revisit them again. With that said my rating was a 4.29.

    Have a great week gang!

Guitarist John Williams is awesome ... need to watch _Serpentine_ ... early lessons from NBS today, and my bet is there are many more.

Here in partly-sunny Texas, we've got another Buffalo Bayou bomber for a New American-Made Quad Sunday:

Figaro, Figaro, Figaro Fiiigaaaro is classic American-made abbey ale, which means not that good. :slight_frown: The Belgians and the monks make these beers better from my experience, and outside of Ommegang, almost every USA-bred abbey ale I've tried has this nutty/peanutty note to it that ... well ... it doesn't suck. It isn't offensive. It's not a total turn-off. It's just not authentic.

In some cases, that nutty taste works underneath other, better notes. Here that nutty taste is either ruining or replacing the dark fruit flavors normally in a quad.

*sigh* Oh well ... Buffalo Bayou is officially hit or miss. Buffalo Sunset = 5s. Their cucumber wit = memorable. 1836 = always good. But Buffalo Bayou's black ginger beer and this quad = one-offs at best :grimacing:.

That's alright. We got some of this going this weekend:

No rain and that darkish grey/blue sky cleared up and let the sun come out today. So the cobwebs are off the golf clubs; the windows are open; and we're enjoying Day 1 of the hiking/golfing/camping/fishing season.

    Cheers!

An "Imperial Blonde Ale" is an interesting concept. Don't think I've heard of one before. I, too, need to revisit Ommegang, so maybe I'll do so with that beer.

G' Evening fellow NBS-ers! I hope everyone has had and is having a great day. Weather-wise it's been pretty dreary and windy and cold here today in PA!
Today's offering was gifted to me by a work friend; he went on a HUGE beer buying binge last week and was feeling generous!

    Beautiful looking beer!
Cloudy golden blonde body with a white soap bubble head. Plenty of little bubbles stream up from the bottom along the edges of the glass.
Great Belgian yeast aroma with a nice amount of sweetness on the nose; a little pineapple, some lemony citrus.
Taste pairs well with the nose. Belgian yeast funkiness and some lemon.
Nice amount of carbonation with that dry lemony finish.
Very nice beer indeed! Super tasty and one I would think would go great on a hot summer day by the pool.

Earlier today I got to try one of my biggest wants of all time, Life is Like, thanks to the gracious @Houser who opened the bottle at a local share with some awesome people.

Poor photo quality as the fun was in the people. My glass was almost empty but I did get a second small pour.

This beer was rich and full of flavor. The chocolate and the cherries each clearly stood out well in their own right which is something that seems hard to accomplish for many brewers and their beer. Hard to believe the beer is 15% as it drinks very much more smooth. Thanks @Houser!

Good evening, NBSers! It's been a busy weekend, but I did have a chance to grab a new brew, courtesy of @JayORear : Modern Times Booming Rollers IPA with Citra, Motueka, and Centennial; and Pale, Two Row, Carapils, and Wheat.

Couldn't resist a few sips.

Beautiful, clear brew; inviting but subdued aroma. Flavor is a wonderful balance of juicy, herbal hops, and buttery, grainy malts. Wonderful, creamy mouthfeel.

The only complaint is that the buttery component to the flavor grows at it warms, eventually taking away from the overall experience (it resembles Grey Sail's Captain's Daughter DIPA in that particular respect). But an excellent, impressive beer.

Hello and cheers to all the BA's out there enjoying a new brew this fine Sunday. Fine is a relative term being this it was about 33 degrees here with one and off freezing rain and snow.

A little late to the party, but better late than never.

New IPA Sunday here folks. Lawson's Sip of Sunshine.

As I stated in my review I was kind of disappointed with this brew. Started off with the pour. I love my IPA's/APA's cloudy/hazy and reeking of tropical notes. This was slightly hazy and had a bitter pine aroma. If you like the resinous/dank notes then you'll probably love this brew. Not saying this is a bad brew by any means, just not my favorite.

    Cheers!

    New American IPA Sunday

Greetings professors of pale ales and post-docs of porter! I hope this post finds you enjoying another NBS with a wonderful ale or lager in your nonic, flute, or snifter today. Weather in Central OH is sunny, cool, and very much mid-March-like. Plenty of standing water due to the quick thaw but it's a welcome change to shovelling the driveway and sidewalks which seemed to be a weekend routine over the last few months.

I hope whatever you're doing today you had a chance to sample a tasty new brew and enjoy all the trappings of another good New Beer Sunday.

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

    Matt

P.S. Big thanks to @Tammisbutler for the chance to sample this tasty West Coast treat!

Aroma: Bright tangerine, orange, and light caramel notes abound. Pithy citrus fruit character. Moderate Pin-Sol notes that are consistent with American hop character. Clean fermentation character.

Appearance: Hazy golden pour with amber edging. Low off white head with tight bubbles. Some effervescence noted throughout the glass.

Flavor: High punchy lemon and powdery hop resins hit the palate up front. Moderate pine flavors quickly follow. Peppery character noted due to alcohol flavors which only accents the firm hop bitterness. Finish is bone dry. Aftertaste lingers with a pine-like bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-low body with moderately high carbonation. Slight carbonic bite and hop derived astringency. No alcohol heat or creaminess noted.

Overall impression: A West Coast punch in the face. This is assertive, dry, and drinkable. Three wins for me. Seems to have that Sierra Nevada character that I get regardless of the beer. I don’t consider that a knock at all. Well done!

As much a fan of the Captains Daughter I understand your view here on that beer. I get the feeling sometimes there are inconsistencies in some batches. The diacetyl element does present itself in certain batches. When its on though to me its fantastic. Maybe the popularity of the beer has forced them to rush production?
