Brethren of the bottle, My question is this. Do you enjoy getting into the holiday spirit for things like St. Paddy's day, Oktoberfest and the like. Or are these not a good reason to grab a beer in your opinion? As I get some age behind me I seem to embrace these holidays more but I no longer hit the pubs in honor of them. What say you?
"Beer holidays" are for BMC's and amateurs. I did get a crack up out of distros being peeved when a beer holiday would fall on a Friday or Saturday, thus robbing them of an extra drinking day during the week to account for when peddling beer.
St. Patrick's is an iffy one for me despite my celtic heritage. I enjoy corned beef, stout and red headed lasses at least as much as the next guy, so I might stop into a bar at dinner time, but I'm not making an all-day drunken Tuesday out of it. Just not my thing.
I'm pretty much Danny Glover on St. Paddy's Day. If I get totlally blotto middle of the week I'm wrecked for the rest of it.
I will try to pair the beer style or place of origin with the holiday (ie, Irish beers fot St. Pats, or oktoberfest beers for oktoberfest). I also feel like seasonal beers work for other holidays that are in those seasons, as I'm sure most BA's feel. However, in terms of "gearing up" for an all day drinking binge just for a holiday, no, that is not in my wheelhouse.
We celebrate St. Arnulf of Metz and make a little beer festival, and that´s pretty much it. Not St Patricks or Oktoberfest for Mexico. Well maybe a couple of events in october but not relevant either.
I usually get together with some good friends for Oktoberfest to drink some quality Marzenbier but other than that, it's just another day for me.
Only reason I got a drink on st. Patty's day is cause the place I took my wife out to had an excellent beer tap that couldn't go unnoticed (Tuesdays are our days to go out, we didn't plan on going out just cause it was a holiday).
Oktoberfest- Never been Super Bowl- Chili, nachos and beer? Why the hell not? I like watching football... Saint Patrick's Day- I'm neither Irish or Catholic; will still drink beer and rock out to Dropkick Murphys, though. 4th of July- If you're not grilling and drinking beer, you're not American (doesn't apply if you're not actually American). Thanksgiving- Another legitimate beer drinking holiday, though I prefer to keep this holiday secular (not everyone will agree; don't care). Christmas- Not Christian; I consider it an extension of Thanksgiving with presents and winter themes. New Year- Doesn't always fit my schedule, although I do like champagne (or a tripel).
