What IPA is your "par"?

Which IPA is the IPA that you compare all IPAs with? For me it's Torpedo. Some IPAs are better: like Firestone and Southern Tier 2X, but others do not reach the standard set by Torpedo (like Snake Dog, Sprecher, and Ballantine-- though the latter may invite debate.)

    So....

What IPA serves as YOUR par? This is the IPA that serves as a standard by which all other IPAs are judged.

This is not your favorite IPA, but an IPA that you think hits the par 100%.

I really, really like Westbrook IPA. And Founder's Centennial is quite solid.

Deschutes Fresh Squeezed. Awesome IPA, not high on ABV, and so easy to acquire.

    Also Schlafly AIPA and TIPA

Victory HopDevil for me. I had a few other IPA's before it, but it was the one that caught my attention.

Growing up in New England it had to be Harpoon IPA. Still one of my staples

I don't have one for IPAs in general because there are too many varieties of IPA for anything to constitute as a "neutral" or "base" IPA formula.

I see your point. There is a lot of variety out there. But there is also some homogeneity too. Anyone who labels their product something like "Lagunitas IPA" is trying to make a standard IPA. Yes there are a multitude of varieties, but there is also a standard.

There are too many kinds of IPA to use as a "par". I'd say Alpine Nelson for those IPAs centered around Nelson Sauvin, Zombie Dust for Citra (it's pretty much an IPA), Sculpin for your classic West Coast IPA, Blazing World or Nugget Nectar for hoppy ambers, Enjoy By for DIPAs...

Right. I hear you. But I don't mean DIPAs, ambers or any other extrapolation of the style. I mean simply the style itself: IPA.

Then again, you still have differences within IPA. There are some focused on bitterness, some are more balanced, some focused on pineyness, citrus, fruity/juicy...

I could say Nelson, Sculpin, 60 Minute, and Stone IPA are all some of my "pars".

Lately, even though I didn't give it a glowing review my par for course IPA-wise is Ballast Point Big Eye IPA (of which I now have a fridge door filled with).

However Deschutes Fresh Squeezed is the IPA that "brings home the bacon and fries it in the pan" (to coin a Seinfeld phrase) aka my all time favourite

Lagunitas IPA. Its high quality, cheap and well distributed where I live.

Although it's new to the game, right now it's Hop Hunter. Already on many occasions, I've been drinking on something new and different and, usually, more expensive and still thinking that I'd rather be having a Hop Hunter...
