I was under the impression from the pictures of Mike blending beer in January, TG's Tweets stating sr71 wasn't assassin, and various people saying the two taste very different, that SR71 isn't assassin with additional aging. I realize there is a lot of speculation here that TG is really misleading people, so who knows, maybe it is just assassin? But to be honest, with the current info out there, I do believe a description that just says "a stout aged for 2 years in PVW barrels" is more accurate and less confusing. I could probably find you a hundred descriptions of beers on here that are pointless pieces of information, but I would still rather have that than info that is may be incorrect/misleading

Also (assuming it is all correct), I think adding that description to cable car would be much better than the current "no notes at this time"

I'm super good at reading between the lines and multiple people in this thread and elsewhere have claimed insider information directly from Mike. They haven't said, "Mike told me this" but they've said "I know  that this is just Assassin that sat in the barrel longer."

It would be cool if Mike could come out and say what it is, but alas he probably has some sort of NDA in place where he can't say much about the goings on.

I do agree with you though that just because Assassin and SR71 share the same base beer it doesn't make them the same beer. They are both offshoots of the same beer, but then attributed as being the same as one another.

I would liken it to what they do at Cycle with the DOS stuff - they have one base stout and then treat it with different barrels/adjuncts which gives it a different name.

All fair points. I've rewritten the blurb drawing from the Ratebeer description but making it a bit less...condescending?

@mrpeterandthepuffers is on the right track. Also - does TG have any barrel-aged beers that aren't based on Norseman's Wrath? No. Are there any adjuncts in SR-71? None listed on the label. Do you think they would age imperial stout in oak barrels for 2 years and then blend in fresh non-imperial stout? Probably not (but possible, I suppose). Doesn't really take rocket science here to deduce these are barrels from the last batch of Assassin that were set aside for one reason or another.

I'm sure it does taste different - Goose Island did a demonstration with four barrels of BCS all from the same year, same bourbon, same batch, that all tasted pretty different. Both consistency and variety in barrel-aged beers are byproducts of blending (or lack thereof). Between that, the extended oak aging, and whatever variability is happening on the consumer side I would expect them to taste different. I'd be curious to do an A/B comparison with the 2014 Assassin though...

Re: Cable Car. Nearly every Lost Abbey sour starts with Soured Avant Garde and/or "Mellow Yellow" (aka barrel-aged Amigo Lager). Again, variety is created through blending, adjuncts, or different types of barrels.

Well, maybe you should stay out of Minnesota then and attend all those perfectly run high quality beer events in South Dakota

It was a joke dawg. I enjoy whacked out people stealing cars and crashing into stuff, as long as it's not my car or crashing into me.
