Many people, like myself seem to have many different shapes and sizes of glassware. But does glassware matter? Have you ever had a beer in a glass "meant" for another style and the outcome was different? Or just your favorite glass?

Does glass matter? Emphatically, yes, IMO, but that doesn't mean I have a glass for every single style. For me, any glass that tapers off and channels aroma is a glass worth drinking from. Death to the shaker pint!

When it comes to aroma, glassware makes a world of difference, IMO. Just the other day I was sampling a beer out of a pint glass and wasn't getting much aroma. I poured it into a snifter and it opened up dramatically.

    agree.

notably, while it makes a difference, it's not a very subtle/refined/fine-grained thing. in my experience, it's usually just "do you need to stick your nose in a big glass bowl or not?"

also, not that they're exclusive, but temperature makes a bigger difference.

It absolutely matters. I do not know that it is imperative that you have every type of glass to pair with its intended beer, but as was already said, at minimum a glass that tapers and concentrates the aroma makes a world of difference. I drink almost all my beers from a teku glass now (that I recently purchased), while my wife typically just uses a pint glass. Having tried the same beer from two different glasses side by side I can tell you it really makes a difference. Her palate is not as evolved as mine is at this point, and even she was shocked at how much better the beer was from the teku glass.

drinking from a standard cylindrical dinnertime glass is creepy

Additionally glassware, in my opinion, enhances the sensory experience from what you see and what you touch (how you interact with the beer). Sure, it may not change the taste but it sure makes it an overall better experience.

Yes. After I started using "proper" glassware, the shaker pint is worthless to me. It doesn't let you enjoy the beer fully. A tulip glass, or anything with a tapered mouth gives you the full experience. I HATE when bars serve beer in shaker pints, especially when they're incredibly aromatic. You really need a glass that's gonna lock in the aromas or else it's just missing something. And it's also known that smell directly affects taste, since our tongues can only detect sweet, salty, bitter, and sour.

I drink all of my beer from tulips. If I'm lucky, it's branded from that brewery.

Obviously to many, glassware is detrimental.
I personally tend to care more about the beer than the glass, but when I have a choice, I will always choose a full glass.

For the pure aroma, yes. Otherwise, it's unnecessary.

I own over 20 beer glasses of various sizes, shapes and from different breweries, with the venerable Duvel glass being my favorite. Having said that, I've noticed of late, that beer tastes and smells better (especially IPAs) when imbibed straight out of the bottle or can. So maybe John Kimmich was onto something when he printed those now famous words on the Heady...

The only thing that really matters is that the glass should not leak.

Beer glasses really do matter. My wife broke my last globe, so I went on a search for a new one. I found the tripel karmeliet gift pack..kinda expensive but I really liked the glass. I'm so proud of it..way too big but it's great. I also bought a Omnegang Game of Thromes globe. I had a nice day of glassware.

Yes it is! I don't know why it seems wrong but it seems WRONG. Rather drink it from the original vessel.

I don't know if I am that much of an aficionado to really discern a difference in aromas. I take people's word for it.

But another thing that glassware certainly adds is visual enjoyment. One is able to see the color and complete head of the beer. The way the beer shapes along the contours of the glass can also be aesthetically pleasing.

It matters as much as you want it to:wink:

I own quite a few glasses that range from different styles but most of the beer I drink gets poured into either a nonic pint glass or this German style dimpled mug that I've got:sunglasses:

Most of the time though when I splurge and get some good Belgian beer though (its so damn expensive) or heavier/barrel aged stouts or sours I tend to rummage through my collection for the perfect glass. And usually while trying something new. But if I'm having an Anchor Porter for the thousandth time it doesn't matter what glass its in I'll enjoy the hell out of it!
