I sure hope this is closer to the first batch and nothing like the most recent one, which was borderline undrinkable.

750's instead of the little 12oz? I liked the old 4 packs they had.

are they still doing release parties for that saying you need to buy a ticket to be able to purchase some, then release it into distro a couple weeks later?

Was the Silva Stout that GF sent to GABF identical to what was released to consumers in 2013?

To compete in GABF 2012, you would've had to submit it by late August 2012, whereas the release to consumers wasn't until late January 2013. That means that GF either packaged the entire batch and sat on it for almost five months before releasing it (entirely possible), or cherry picked a specific barrel/blend to send to GABF and then released everything else - a similar but tangibly different blend - to consumers in January 2013. Or submitted the 2010 version, which wouldn't be a surprise at all.

This picture of Chuck from GABF 2012 that was on GF's Facebook feed shows him holding a bottle from 2010, not the bottle that was released in 2013. The label changed slightly between the releases and what's in the picture is the older design. The first batch was undeniably great, but unless the GABF 2012 medal was based on the exact same beer that was released in January 2013, it doesn't mean much for defending that release's quality.

I'd be shocked if the 2012 GABF winner was the same stuff as the 2013 release. Why would you enter a beer that you don't think is within 6 months of being ready for the consumers?

I think you are right, Xul - that was the 2010 they entered.

When you still have memories of how disappointed you were with the 2013 Silva Stout, you have incentive to do the research.

Surprised nobody has said it yet....

    Just ask Green Flash.
If they tell you it will be released for distro, it will probably be released for distro.
If they tell you it won't be released for distro and you need to buy a ticket to their event to get it...... it will probably be released for distro.

Never had it before 2013, but I thought it was delicious. Had it on tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank. Been hoping to find a bottled version ever since.

Yes it was the last release. Was it January 2013 or SDBW 2012? The bottles sent in were not cherry picked barrels but from the public release. The next batch will be released on Tuesday 3/24 in the tasting room and distributed nationwide that week. There will be a few kegs of Silva with Coffee on tuesday as well as a firkin. Hope to see you there.

    Regular was good, not great.

Coffee was out of this world. That may be a compliment to Mostra as much as Green Flash themselves, but either way just a killer brew. Wish that one was bottled too.

    Just one man's opinion.

I agree that the coffee was fantastic (also wish they bottled it) and the regular was good. Not super barrel forward but overall well balanced IMO. I still grabbed a bottle.

If I recall correctly, the original release was a blend of barrel-aged and regular double-stout. I don't see any mention of that on the item description here:

    http://www.greenflashbrew.com/our-beers/silva-stout/

I do remember the original release being well-balanced (not super barrel-forward) and was a pleasure to drink right out the gate. If this current release is similar, I'll be more than happy with it.

If you read the side of the bottle it says it was blended with 10 gallons of fresh double stout. You cant see side of bottle from that but i saw a picture of the side of the bottle.
