I'm a fan of Brown Ales also. I usually stick with local brews like Short's or Belll's for Browns, but I tried a Newcastle for the first time tonight and it was excellent.

Exactly. Everyone who says "I don't really like brown ales but I like DFH Indian Brown Ale," have missed the point of a brown ale.

I like brown ales. For something flavorful that isn't too high in ABV. I wish they sold Moose Drool in New England. They're good for when I'm neither in the mood for a stout nor a hefe.

Brown ales were my introduction to darker beers. Since I have no love for huge amounts of hops, these are great for times I don't want a higher ABV stout or porter. I'm always looking for the next good example of the style. Ellie's, Cabin Fever and Sam Smith's Nut Brown are all very tasty. As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, Cigar City is said to make a couple of good ones, but I've never had the pleasure. Any other suggestions?

My brother-in-law and i have really been searching for different brown ales to try. But it's extremely difficult to find new ones in my area. I live palo and indian brown ale from dogfish head and rogue hazelnut nectar. Anybody else got any good suggestions readily available in wisconsin or illinois ( live closer to the border).

In Wisconsin; have you tried 1).Ale Asylum Madtown nutbrown, its pretty good. Also, New 2).Glarus fat squirrel, but its a seasonal and not out now. The 3).Goose Island brown is pretty decent also. Any autumn brown seasonal that comes out from 4).Sierra Nevada will probably be god too. Also, 5).Bell's Best Brown.

My favorite brown is Maduro by cigar city, but not available around here.

I remember when Brown Ales were like IPAS are now a days. Everyone wanted one. Not really into them to much, but also haven't had to many of them that stood out. I'd rather just jump straight to a porter.

I used to consider brown ale my favorite style... now I would say stout/porter, but I still love a good brown ale. SN tumbler is amazing, Duck Rabbit makes a good one, and DFH Indian Brown Ale is a classic. Unfortunately many brown ales are way way too sweet, but when the brewer isn't trying to give you diabetes they can be perfectly balanced, amazing beers.
