Do you enjoy these flavors in a DIPA? I recently had Hop Ranch and Molotov Lite, and although they were very good sippers and drinkable, the dank flavors mentioned in the title seemed to over whelm the fruity, piny aspects. I much prefer a DIPA which showcases pine and tropical fruit. I'm thinking the onion/dank will grow on me. I enjoyed Molotov Lite. Also, are there other DIPA's that have this tropical fruit/green onion taste profile I should seek out?

Dank has become the default IPA profile for for the past few years. I think it's due to the popularity/availability of Citra and Simcoe. "Enjoy By..." is probably the quintessential example. I do enjoy it, but I also still appreciate the classic San Diego style that first got me into IPA - Centennial, CTZ, Cascade, etc...

“Do you enjoy these flavors in a DIPA?” A BIG “no”!!

“I recently had Hop Ranch and Molotov Lite, and although they were very good sippers and drinkable, the dank flavors mentioned in the title seemed to over whelm the fruity, piney aspects.” I am personally not a fan of Hop Ranch since I perceive too much dank in that beer.

The hops aromas/flavors that I like, in no particular order, are: Piney/Resin, Citrus, Tropical Fruit, Floral, Spicy, Berry Fruits, …

Certain hops are prone to producing dank aromas/flavors. For example Summit, Apollo, Columbus,…

    Cheers!

Edit: each individual will perceive flavors differently. I personally perceive Citra as being tropical fruits and Simcoe as being piney.

I've poured out several versions of Enjoy By because of the overload of onion and garlic that I perceive. I hate that flavor.

Yeah when I get the onion/garlic thing going on, I usually see that as a bad thing

Absolutely not. It comes across as salty onions or even body odor to me. It's especially extreme if there is no body to the beer, which is also becoming a trend.
While I think many breweries are brewing more beers that taste like this, I think there are plenty that are eschewing it for more citric and less bitter notes, too.

    Personally love weed-esque hop profiles.

@JackHorzempa nailed it: we all have unique taste/smell perceptions. I keep looking for "dank" in Hop Ranch, but have yet to find it. Falls more on the citrus/floral scale to me.

If you are digging the onion, Columbus hops are something you should look for. Deviant Dales is a good example--just check the canning date before purchase.

I had "Enjoy By", the April 2014 version, and I detected no "dankness". Very tropical fruity with almost no detection of alcohol. Is this year's version more on the dank side??

CTZ is my favorite. Columubus, Tomahawk and Zeus. Can't get more "Danker" than those.

@Beertsipper Fresh Flying Dog's The Truth has all of the above. When it gets older more Onion and Dill flavors are dominant.

Not saying that I love the onion flavor, but certain beers have the back end as oniony. Molotov Lite was one. Three years ago, Gubna was the worst. From what I understand, the new Gubna has eliminated the hops that gave it that dank Flavor. I've had the new, fresh Deviant Dale's and I detected no onion or garlic. Never tried Other Half's beers. Are you saying that their IPA/DIPA have a distinct onion flavor? Recently had my favorite East Coast IPA, and it had no veggie in there, and was very piney with mild fruit, moderate hops, and very little malt presence. I guess that this is what I'm seeking in a IPA/DIPA. Much prefer it over Heady...

I've yet to try Sorachi Ace from Brooklyn. My local grocer is selling the 4-packs. Might give it a go...

True, those hops certainly possess that earthy flavor, but I think the reason they became so popular was because of their high alpha acids, i.e. bittering qualities that pack a lot of bang for their buck when they are added early in the boil. It seems the obsession with the Dank flavor profile is a more recent phenomenon - within the past 5 years or so. When I used to homebrew, I loved using CTZ for bittering, but I used it sparingly late in the boil. Nowadays it seems everything goes through multiple dry hopping stages and very late-boil additions. Everything is bigger. My favorite IPAs are the ones that balance that earthiness with tropical notes, a fair amount of bitterness and a sublime floral or piney finish.

As with most IPA questions, the best answer is usually Pliny.

Yup, Gubna used to be brewed solely with Summit hops. It is now brewed with a combination of Cascades and Summit.

Summit is the hop that can provide an oniony flavor/aroma.

MBC's, Dinner is my standard. Very hard to find unless you go to the brewery. I have a Maine trip scheduled for early September of this year. Founder's also has a great DIPA. It's readily available here in season.

I've never had Hi-Res. Is this a danker, earthier version of Res? I found Res to be very tropical with pineapple in the finish with some evident booze in the middle.
