I was thinking about having an "epic" (by my low standards anyway) stout tasting when I graduate in August with a few of my buddies that appreciate craft beer. There would be four of us. I was thinking about opening the following: Black Tuesday 11'; Choc Rain 12'; GI Rare; KTG 11'; and Abyss 07'. I am on the fence b/c Im thinking that is too much for only four of us and our pallets would be destroyed fast and not appreciate the beers.

Any advice from folks that have had similar tastings?

I'd be shocked if your pallets could not hold the weight of just those 5 beers.

Your palates would be fine too. Eat some saltines and drink some water between beers. Standard judging is around flights of 5, iirc.

That's a warm up for some of my tasting groups (even with four people)

Generally I feel the upper ounce limits for appreciating beer is around 40-50 oz each. Throw in some crackers, water (sparkling is nice) and a sour here and there to cleanse your palates

The key is to open them all up, take an ounce or two from each and then revisit. Don't try to finish one bottle at a time... Plus that opens up the possibility of creating blends later, if you're so inclined.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll probably be back to ask advice on the tasting as I have never had or attended one and I am the biggest craft beer enthusiast among my friends.

One question regarding the sour. Again, considering palate. Would a really good sour be a waste with big stouts?

I agree with the other posts that a palate cleansing is a good idea between beers. I will add that I usually like to vary the beer types during tastings or throw in small volume beers between the big beers in a single style tasting. A variety of taste will allow the palate to appreciate what each beer has to offer.

You should all be fine with those beers and I like the idea of small samples then revisiting.

Also I think order will be important as well. I'd go:
    Kate
    Abyss
    Rare
    Black Tuesday
    Chocolate Rain

I've found it really helps to do un barrel aged beers first so your palate hasn't tasted any bourbon and can appreciate the other nuances in a beer such as Kate

    Cheers!

If your friends are not as into craft as you are...are you sure you want to waste that BOOYA lineup on them?

BA is all about sharing, and good friends and graduation sure calls for it BUT... to have any of those beers go unappreciated would suck.

No. Wouldnt be wasted at all. Would break things up, make some taste buds come alive again. Refreshing, light, crisp.

    Cheers!

    ^This.

When my crew tastes a lot stouts we always include a sour to break things up. Generally it goes Awesome Stout, Awesome Stout, Insane Sour and repeat

I like to execute some .rar at tastings then open a random, never-heard-of-the-brewery local to bring everyone back down to ground level.

Woah, wait a minute! Are your friends into good expensive craft beer? Or are they the kind that will not be able to discern between a regular imperial stout and a barrel aged stout? If your friends are noobies you might want to wait to open these epic bottles with people who will really appreciate this beer. If your friends don't like these beers your gonna be stuck with a huge amount of awesome beer that will undoubtedly go to waste. Finally, IMO, a sour would be ok but I would rather wait to do a sour tasting!

Ill bring this new stuff I bought that just came out, it looks awesome, its called "Bud Lite Lime: Lime-A-Rita". Adjunct lager and sugary margarita mixed in a can, how can this not be awesome, right?

If your friends can't appreciate what you are proposing to open, why not set up a bigger tasting for NC BAs. At least then others could bring other epic beers to contribute to your celebration. I would contribute
