Wired Magazine is not the first place I would expect to read an article about brewing sours, but I saw this today and thought it was a pretty fun read. Also includes some cool information about Allagash in there as well.

Thanks for the post. Intersing read! I live about 3-4 hours from their brewery and have been to Portland many times (including last month) but have never been to their brewery nor have I tried any of their beers (regrettably).

Good to read an article that actually has information instead of a best of. Kudos to the scientific bias of the article.

Good article except "If you’re looking to try a sour beer" : Beatification, Coolship Resurgam, Bam Bierre, SA KMF Grand Cru, Rose de Gambrinus, Tilquin Gueze.

I've only ever seen Bam Bierre and Tilquin for retail in DC, and two of the others are brewery only, on opposite coasts. For the general Wired audience, really should have called out things that have even a possibility of being found in ~many~ average Total Wine/Bev Mo/Whole Foods throughout the country.

I just have to say, White Labs Belgian Sour Mix isn't the best souring mix out there, but it can make a solid beer (if a bit bland on its own). The fact that the author's first sour turned out terrible isn't likely the fault of the yeast.

Some good info in there, but some info that points out he's pretty much full of shit and parroting spinets of things that he has heard and compiling them.

Similar to my take. Overall, an enjoyable read but there did seem to be a gap in some of the information provided.

I'm not a fan of sours, but this was a pretty fun article to read. And I also found a nice descriptor that I've gotta use sometime - "rhino farts mixed with sour fruit".....That's just awesome.

Dang that is the second great beer article I have read today, how often does that happen?

Thanks for posting that, it makes me anxious to get back to brewing, and to start making some sours.

The brewer for Luminous told me he had gotten some yeast from a barrel at Jester King and his aging his sour for a year! I cannot wait to try it!

Almanac made one: Sourdough Wild Ale. (I have no idea why the ratings are so low—it was delicious.)
