So see you seem to have enjoyed it .

I was reminded of those grapefruit jelly candies that are sold at bulk candy places- with the flavor of grapefruit, but none of the bitter/sour, just like you said. In that sense, it came across as more of a shandy to me- like a beer with candy and/or soda flavors added to it. I guess I was expecting something a bit more 'organic' myself, but then again I could also see taking quite a few down in the right circumstances . Cheers!

Some huffing and puffing going on today...hope the house doesn't come down

My NBS brew just happens to be my Rock the Bock winnings from last Saturday's RTB post contest!

Bockzilla by Western Reserve Brewing. 7.6 ABV

Nice deep copper/tan with a beautiful off white thick bubbly head. Very little lacing with hints of burnt toast on the nose. A rich malty sweetness engulfs the tongue, a bready, medium body/carbonation fills out the middle with a slightly crisp bitter finish that begs for that next sweet sip to be taken.

Over all a very good bock...a little dry on the finish, probably the ABV but it really isn't boozy hot. I'd buy this again...but then again...I didn't buy it!

Spoils of the victor...thanks for the votes and thanks again to @WesMantooth & @LeperJim for putting on a great theme day...

    Cheers NBS!

I'm not sure if it's entirely the hop profile; it's the overall presentation. Both a little syrupy, a little hot (although the old Hi-Res was 11.1%, so quite a bit boozier overall), and both tasted like hop juice to me (not a bad thing, really). The malt bills are quite different; the hop bills, probably remarkably similar, overall.

But the new Hi-Res is much more subdued and restrained; I think it's a much improved beer (and I did like the first run, and I did like Molotov Lite, so that's saying something).

New import to the US – Rothaus Pils

Rothaus Pils has just recently been imported to the US by St. Killian importing. Other parts of the Northeast (Boston area, NYC area) have already received this beer but it is just now being distributed in the Philly area. Woo-Hoo!

St. Killian Importing Co, has a handy beer finder on their website to help you find the beers they import: http://stkillian.com/beers/beer-finder/

Poured into my 17 ounce Pilsner glass:

    Appearance

Light straw color with a big fluffy white head.

    Aroma

Aroma is dominated by very noticeable pilsner malt aroma; there is some Noble hop aroma there as well.

    Taste

Substantial flavors of pilsner malt with some herbal and floral notes provided by the Noble hops. Nice firm bitterness to provide some balance to the pilsner malt flavor.

    Mouthfeel

A pleasant mouthfeel from the pilsner malt with a dry finish.

    Overall

I really enjoyed this beer. Substantial pilsner malt backbone accompanied with herbal/spicy hop flavors.

Below is information from the Rothaus website:

The most popular beer from Rothaus is the Rothaus Pils. Very popular, our Pils in 0.33 l bottle as Rothaus is Pils Tannenzäpfle. With 12.4% Plato Wort and 32 IBUs, the Rothaus Pils takes an outstanding position among the Pils beers.

Bottom-fermented yeast from your own selected ferments the Rothaus Pils, before it conditions about 4 weeks. The Pils possesses strong and elegant taste and its high carbonation. The feeling of freshness that is triggered by the carbon dioxide in the beer called effervescence.

    Cheers!

I scored a four pack locally in my area for the first time. I had this while I was in San Francisco in October and I was just blown away by it.

It was my absolute favorite beer in 2014!! Hooray!

I did not know about John Renbourn passing. I lived for years listening to John and Bert Jansch, both masters of keeping the good parts of the past alive. This music is a ladder through time.

Good morning and salutations New BSers! It's a lovely summer day here in the high Arctic of NW PA - the sun is thawing out and rumor has it that the temps may rise to nearly freezing by sundown. As a a crossover from WBAYDN, today's new brew is Terrapin Mosaic Red Rye IPA and already it's a favorite of mine. Since I'm a big fan of rye PAs and Terrapin seems to make a lot of rye-based brews, it's no wonder that this brewski is moving into a tie with Terrapin Rye Pale Ale as my favorite easy drinking beer. The rye comes shining through and the mosaic hops add both the coniferous aromas and tastes that I love as well as some generic fruit aromas. Just plain good. And I just don't care that I've rated it with an rdev of +14.9 - for me it's an excellent example of the style, lovely to look at and even better to drink. And having visited the great people at Terrapin (Every time I'm in the South, I make a side trip to Terrapin, no matter how far away it is (Unless I'm in Texas)) and been treated well, I'm certainly going to try every brew of theirs that I can find!

Moving through Boulevard Brewing's releases (new to our area)...

Currently up to their Long Strange Tripel...

The cork and cage always befits a tripel...
...this particular cork flew off and into the snow...
Reminds me of a fish that leaps free from it's tank...

The tripel was my strong pale ale of choice when I first got into craft, and the Westmalle is the standard by which I gauge the rest, closely followed by the Karmeliet and Chimay... La Fin du Monde is very popular but has a particular taste element that takes it down a notch or two for me. Of the American-made tripels, Curieux, CCB's collaborative Tropical Tripel (retired :slight_frown:), and Rockmill's Cask Aged Tripel are faves, although they're all tweaked by barrel aging...
This was a nice hybrid between a traditional Belgian and American-made tripel - the flavors and aromas were fruity and mildly hoppy, nicely balanced, and with a gentle fresh grain undercurrent... The feel was spot-on, lush and fuzzy... I'm putting it into the same category as the St. Bernardus, Tripel B, and Fluffy White Rabbits tripels. Recommended...

Sorry, but I'm no Deadhead... :stuck_out_tongue:

All new brews ahead today, so I'll see ya later...

If you're gonna hijack the ship, at least do it right. You need to set an example by talking about what you have going on, and you have to set down the rules. That's what separates NBS from wbaydn, we actually take the time to talk to each other, and follow a simple, basic formula that has been passed down throughthe caring hands of several overseers now.
Tell us about it after you drink it. And, share a bit more, don't just do a hit n run, that's for wbaydn

Good morning NBS, In WMass yesterday we got 3" of "mood snow" looks nice but really?
Today bright and sunny, Cardinals out side the window busy, and you know its spring here because
    the Turkey Vultures have returned.
Today we start with Idle Hands Cognition, billed as a Belgian Brown Ale, it certainly has those elements.
It is well constructed, and at 4.7% ABV a nice treat. It does however need a little direction, not quite Brown ale, Abbey Ale, or Belgian ale. With all that I appreciate the craft, and will certainly seek it out again.
    Cheers all, enjoy your NBS

    Cognition

    Idle Hands Craft Ales
Belgian Dark Ale / 4.70% ABV

    3.61/5 rDev -4% | rAvg: 3.76
    look: 3.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a bottle dated 1/15/15, into a modified tulip glass.
A - Pecan colored pour, with gentle carbonation. With some work, a thin cream colored cap can be had, dissipation is quick, no lacing during the experience.
S - Sweet brown sugar, toffee, vanilla. There is a clear Belgian yeast component, bringing forward fruity esters, raisin, young fig, blonde cured tobacco, as the beers moves toward room temperature those fruits dominate.
T - Light roasted malt starts things off, brown sugars, earl grey tea follow. Very mild in all aspects, which keeps this quite pleasant. With some time a little Trappist yeast signature sneaks in for a visit.
M - Thin in body, the palate is sweetly coated with a long winding exit. Leaves a cool almost refreshing feel, finely carbonated, far from effervescent. The flavors and body compliment each other well. With no real calling card or linger the urge is to sip some more.
O - This is a bit of a confounding offering, a nod to brown ales, a thin bodied beer that with some heft could be a wonderful Abbey ale. Hints of Trappist sweetness and yet refreshingly clean across the palate. A fine offering from Idle Hands.
    Cheers
