@rjp217 - Grove was a terrible beer. That never should have been released. We bought back many cases from retailers and learned a valuable/expensive lesson. If we are on the fence about a beer it should be dumped, if its not world class it should be dumped. That's our die hard mantra now. Dumping a batch of a pale ale with 100% Jarrlyo hops today. Nothing wrong with it quality wise but everyone hated the taste of the jarrylo hops. The mantra lives on.

I appreciate the honesty, but it seriously pisses me off that I spent $14 on a bottle of Grove that 23oz of went down the drain and this comment comes out.

Yeah, very interesting to see his response to this. I'm sure he's going to offer you some sort of refund as a save-face, when tons of people bought a beer that the brewer just called terrible and received no such thing.

I did not intend to piss anyone off with this comment. I was just being blatantly honest and expressing our regret for not correcting the problem out of the gate. Grove has a long and frustrating history at NSB. If you want the full story I am happy to share but the short story was it was based on Art series of beers that were very well received. We then attempted to scale up and we did a pretty good job on the first batch which was 7bbls and then we tried to go for 20bbl batches on our old crappy brew house and the beer got lost in translation. The yeast, the pithy-ness of the fresh yeast, or the process combo was off. Some people seemed to like it but others didn't. We considered pulling it at various points and it was heavily debuted amongst the staff on what to do. We eventually made the call to pull it from the shelf. From then on we pretty much decided that if more than one person doesn't like a batch of beer it gets dumped or recalled. We learned the lesson as I mentioned previously.

We aren't perfect, we make mistakes but we learn and improve. Our passion for making great beer is immense and we are relentless in trying to dial in every step of our beer making process and our customer experience. The beer we made 3 years ago or even last year and the beer we make today are very different. We can't thank our fans enough for supporting us thru our journey as a brewery.

Hopefully you haven't lost faith in our beers and are willing to try our latest creations.

I'm sure they regret releasing it from the sounds of it. They'll loose a lot more than you did when people judge them off that beer. At least, they are realizing they need to change their quality control and live up to a higher standard in a highly competitive market. Also, its no small thing to have staff that can recognize quality. What about the hundreds of shitty beers out there that brewers continue to put out thinking its satisfactory...I've wasted tons of money drainpouring those offerings over the years.

Yup, losing a customer for life over one bad beer hurts big time for. I wanted to publicly admit the mistake in hope of winning a customer back or at least giving us another shot. We are producing a lot of awesome beers these days and to rule us out over a bottle of Grove would really suck. Again I apologize for the mistake in production and our management of the bad batch of Grove from last year.

they've had some growing pains, and i'm frankly still not a big proponent of their original lineup of flagship shelf beers, but they have really impressed me in the past 2 years, and the recent 10-12 months in particular. all that said, infection is not something i have ever faulted them for.

Heading there to celebrate right after finishing the Boston Marathon on April 20th. Can't wait to see the new digs, as last year's visit had to be very quick with the parking situation!

The two new sours debuted at the Anniversary party are excellent, especially the Guinevere: intense apricots, sweet, tart, refreshing. And very glad to get another glass of El Lechedor before it's gone for the season. Congrats on the 3 years Night Shift!

i drain poured every single one of my sour futures from 2014. I wouldn't even trade them I felt too badly.

for 2013 they were good, some great. but 2014 were all fucked.

Somer was a bit too acidic for me this year compared to the past (sad to see it will be discontinued, because before this year, it was a fave), but none of my Sour Futures were drain pours (I had all of them). I wasn't sure about Mystery when I tasted it on tap at the brewery, but my bottle was great. Ever Weisse and Cape Codder were even better this year than in the past.
