I follow a few beer geeks on Instagram recently, as I got an account not long ago, and am blown away by how much some of these guys drink. I didn't think it was possible physically or financially to be drinking 6-10 whales a day. Some of these people I follow must drink $1000 + in beer a month at least.

Anyone else kind of taken back by this? Or is this more prevalent than I think in the community?

95% of what I drink is homebrew. Probably 2% is Sierra nevada and 2.9% nothing special. A fool and his money, I suppose...

I'd say someone may need to seek professional help.

the real kicker is that none of these guys seem to be employed by a job that pays well enough to support a life devoted to beer (other than the fact that they spend so much on beer), or employed at all. what kind of job allows you so much time spent hunting down whalez and then drinking them?

I have no problems with it. A lot of hobbies could require a good amount of cash. Fishing, hunting, photography, birdwatching, etc. can all cost hundreds a month. Good for them!

It's very true, and very real. A guy I've been following for a few months posted a picture of a beer he was drinking on a flight, and it looked like he was on a private jet. I was very jealous to say the least :flushed: (the beer, not the flight ).

I follow some of these guys too, it's mind boggling the amount of time and money that must be spent.

Yeah, I enjoy living vicariously through them as they post and its a good way to keep an ear to the ground on what brewers are putting out. It just baffles me cuz I personally feel guilty spending $50 at the liquor store on a few 6 packs of beer and some 750s, yet I pull up Instagram and see some of these guys putting back 3,4,5,6+ $30 bombers in a night. Humbles me in my guilt I suppose.

To each their own. I don't have an opinion about it one way or another. Enjoy life, and drink good beer in the process. Cheers.

It's not that hard if you have a group of friends that actively trade. You spend $20-50 to acquire one rare beer, bring it to a bottle share with 10 people who each brought something different, and you can tick several hundred dollars worth of "whalez" for relatively cheap.

Hell, sometimes you just get lucky. A couple weeks ago I stopped by a place near my house to grab a pint and discovered that several people I knew (including @Shmeal @Phobicsquirrel & @Raimalise) were hanging out splitting bottles. After sampling Double Barrel Hunahpu, Tequila Barrel Mexican Cake, & TG Assassin I realized I needed to go home and grab something to make up for their generosity. I grabbed a bottle of DDG (the only worthy thing that was chilled) and went back to the bar to share it. When I got back, they had cracked Remy's Pappy, Pugachev's Cobra, and a couple other things.

All in all, I was able to sample 15-20 highly rated things for the "price" of that one DDG.

I am lucky to have a great job and have had one child early. I used to sacrifice everything so he could play ice hockey, little league, ride motocross, play guitar. Now he's 30 and I'm 52 and can afford to spend enough on beer every week that a couple local shops hold stuff under the counter for me. I feel I sacrificed and earned the right to have a $100 a week beer habit. I drink barrel aged something almost every night, but I used to drink 35 cent sodas from the machines in front of Walmart so my son had everything he wanted. I don't feel bad about it at all.

This is absolutely true. However, finding that group may be harder for some than others. For example I'm looking for a group of guys to play a $50-100 Buy-in of poker once a month. Figure if 6 people come together, you could win $600, or lose $100. Maybe even lose 6 times in a row and win once to even it out, but if the experience is worth it to all of you, then do it.

I know for a fact though that these people aren't bottle shop buying. Whales are brewery releases only, memberships, that sorta thing, so figuring you bought 5 Hunas, and sampled your ass off at huna day, those 5 you got are looking pretty nice for the trading block. Do that every week or two at different releases, and it makes sense how they can trade up pretty fast and crack those uber whales we all see on IG.

What baffles me is the amount of area covered by these people. I worked 5 miles from my home and put on 12k miles and felt like shit, imagine cruising up and down California's coast, or those trips from Chicago to Munster periodically?

Some people like to make you think they have a certain lifestyle, when the reality is not quite so glamorous. However, there are plenty of people with an assload of discretionary income that can afford to spend whatever they want, whenever they want. I am slightly perturbed that they choose to spend a slice of said assload on bottles of scarce quantity, but then again I never have any trouble finding something to drink at the local bottle shop. Meh, I guess it really doesn't bother me.

Digging his photos though. He's having some fun with it and if it keeps you interested and having a good time in two hobbies, why not.

Some of these would work great in a portfolio to do some advertising work.
