Drinking Whalez

Why drink beer when you can look at it? Once you open it, it loses all its value.

 

Wow, so much hate about what other people do with their time and money, yet I'm sure in another thread from the view of "why don't you drink better beer" these same people would be foaming at the mouth to crucify anyone who might suggest abstaining from macro because "I can drink whatever I want and how dare you tell me what to do"

hey @mbeach717 sorry to blow up your spot, i was just trying to share what i thought was the most interesting beer-related IG account i've come across. if you got attacked or harassed or something, i apologize.

 

Currently saving any and all extra money I can manage for a trip to HF in May. I have to be in that part of the country for my SO's sisters college graduation so that is how she convinced me to go. I figure it will be a long time before I ever have a shot at going agian so gonna have to go big.

OP you answered your own question. The reason is:

Instagram

Instagram is fun, but not a useful tool in terms of getting a snapshot of real life. I don't really follow much in the way of beer, but I do when it comes to all things bike / bike-racing related in NYC. And trust me (as I know a lot of the guys who post) that there's often not much "insta" about what's going on. A lot of these guys (and I'm sure it's the same in the beer scene) who have a ton of followers, are able to leverage instagram etc to support their hobby, so they make it look as good as possible - who wouldn't. I'm sure a lot of these 6-a-day whale pics are a mixture of pics that have been saved for later, or are of what a friend is drinking etc etc

Yeah, you're giving into this. It's a bad thing, and only encourages the "look at me" behavior.

 

I think Instagram is great, post pics, look at other pictures, hauls, etc. More of a community aspect. A lot of trading happens through there as well.

I can say. I see the same thing. alot of these guys have connections in the craft beer industry or work at a brewery themselves. so they get these beers from people that are just hooking them up or probably from going to different Beerfest. For example my friend just recently did a trade with one of these guys, for Bourbon County Vanilla and he traded 2 gandhi bot t-shirts. The guy got the bottle for free at a beer fest from another rep.

The guy who was mooching all the TG stuff brought the Anna and Cantillon. He'd have felt bad if we'd turned him down.

 

As a primarily whalez drinker, let me explain this to you. There are generally 3 types of Whalez drinkers:

1. Trust-fund Tickers (TFT's). We all know this type. No real detailed explanation is needed.

2. Bottle share guys...these guys go to 5 bottle shares a week. They spend the entire night entering their beers on untappd after pounding their 1-oz pour. They have over 10,000 check-ins on untappd in the last 2 years.

3. People who can truly afford it (such as me and others). Generally we have little to no time for shelfies.

 

Even if I could afford to drink only whalez I wouldn't. There's something to be said about keeping things special. Good beer all the time? HELL YEAH!! But to drink only whales........ not for me.

I have a beer related instagram that I post pics of my hauls. The reason I started it was to keep a log of my beer hauls (for myself), and to follow other beer related instagrams. According to some people on here, that makes me an arrogant rich douche apparently.

 

these guys ever heard of a bottle share?
