So craft beer has been exploding in the past year, but in the past few months it's gotten insane. Just absurd, to the point of extreme college-level bandwagoning. I honestly, after spending much thought on it, feel as though speaking against it is more respectful to beer than accepting it. The thing that provoked me is the recent influx to Tree House, and in the past two weeks, Trillium. I see lines of people saying, "What's an IPA? ...OK, just give me the maximum." Even the brewery workers, who I know to some extent, are frustrated and perplexed -- they try to expand to stop the lack of beer, and all of a sudden hundreds of people without jobs show up 2 hours early in line to buy them out on a Thursday. So they weren't good enough to make the trip for BEFORE you read about them on BA? And now that the trade value has gone up, they are? Do you even taste your own beer???

This is obviously a new thing in MA, and has been an issue for a while with other major areas, VT for one.

I could go on but I think leaving it open would generate more discussion. Anyone else have a problem with this?

You sound like the guy who's favorite indi band signed to a major label.

    I totally get the frustration...

Hopcat is an awesome craft pub in Michigan and they are expanding like crazy. We go there a lot. I see all of these people asking the stupidest questions and I just roll my eyes. It is one thing to want to learn, but it is the way the questions are asked and the complete lack of knowledge about the simplest things. And the way the describe to the bartender what they like, is completely stupid. "I don't want anything too heavy", is my favorite one. Like, what the hell does that even mean? It bothers me, and I am far from a snob, but it is just people wanted to get in on the new thing.

Gee, you'd think they'd be happy about the possible job security.

Well, you know, no one would expect someone from Jersey to have sentiment for this, having nothing really good locally. Just like, until recently, no one thought the VT peoples' frustration was worth anything. But until you experience it, you don't really understand what bandwagoning beer really means. Especially in MA where it's overloaded with rich, pampered college students who just want to show their friends they have the "best IPA in the world."

Maniacs aside, if you are devoting yourself to one event or one release, really get there early and make a time out of it with yourself or with friends. The brewery will have to get more creative with their releases if they're showing signs of frustration from mule parties, to me, its money in the bank. Some breweries are making good stuff, made impeccably well and people want it bad. Like it's been said in the past, start brewing your own or drink with your wallet so it doesn't stir you up so much. Pokemon, gotta catch them all!

Sorry to hear that you have to drink with people who are not "beer smart" enough for you.
It must be rough slumming with clueless.
I don't know how you manage

"I don't want anything too heavy" sounds like a pretty good way to ask your server or bartender to recommend a light or medium-bodied beer. What's your point?

I don't see any problem with craft beer "exploding" or that more and more people are coming to appreciate craft beer. In my mind, that's a good thing. More demand for craft is not only good news for breweries, it is good news for all of us (especially the newcomers.)

How are people without jobs buying out anything? Are you referring to trust fund kids?

I'm sorry, what? And yes, TH does brew extremely unique stuff with their own "wallets," as you call it. Personally, I used to be able to enjoy Good Morning as a great beer. Now, I can't even take off work early enough to buy it. Gotta love sellouts, RIGHT?!

Listen, if you haven't even tried a beer, and use it as a currency, you don't appreciate beer. Get off the site and get real.

OP, what exactly do you propose should be done? The brewery is selling its beer, which probably makes the brewery happy. These people are buying the beer, which probably makes them happy. I guess I'm just not sure what the point of the thread is, except to gripe that a bunch of people found out about something that used to not be as well known, and they're kind of ruining it for you.

It's all about making and selling good beer. If random people buy the beer out before you get your hands on it, well that's your fault. If you think those unworthy beer noobs don't have the right to purchase that beer...that makes you the dick

It isn't like that at all, believe me, I am the nicest, most helpful person when it comes to helping people out, when it comes to beer. I am far from a snob, or the weirdo at the bar acting like an expert. It frustrates everybody in the business. I have friends that work in the beer business and when they have to participate in tastings, they will get these annoying fifty year old women who ask stupid, silly questions, who really don't want a real answer, because they aren't listening. You can be at a brew pub on a busy night and you get these people who are asking detailed questions, one after another, like they are buying a car. Its like, its beer, it isn't going to kill you or break you. And you can see the poor bartender, who is trying to be patient, looked annoyed and frantic, because he has to answer a string of stupid questions. Same thing goes for store owners, they get these people that come in and ask for KBS or something rare and they don't realize "the game" that goes along with it. However, they want it, because they heard it was the coolest thing to have.

Well, it's a known fact that people have gotten more annoying as I have gotten older. They're worse drivers too.
    I blame the Internet.
