This is why Cantillon should move to a strictly Bag-in-box operation.

The really odd thing is, I've never had any other bottle leak from what I can remember, and I've shipped in a lot of beer over the years. It's funny, the one beer that is corked *and* capped leaks? But all the others that are only corked or capped....don't? :stuck_out_tongue: What's up with that...?

Mother of god... what do you want from northern California?

I get a feeling I'm going to pay for publicly disclosing that statistic! :stuck_out_tongue: I'm not really looking for anything in particular right now, as the beers from those recent trades are still sitting at my work, waiting for cooler weather so they can be re-shipped to Pembina,ND so I can drive down and pick them up. I've gotten a bit ahead of myself with my beer aquisition in recent months...

Oh, and for everyone planning road trips to Canada after reading the above, the Fou'Foune is sadly all gone off the shelves (it lasted for about a week I think). We got our first Fou'Foune shipment in about 2-3 years back in May and it all went to Alberta. I think they got something like 200-300 bottles worth, which given the relative small size of the beer scene (and population in general) was a huge amount.

Fair enough, I was mostly joking anyway. If I were you I wouldn't have traded any of them. That beer is so good.

General Cantillon Rule- the nastier the cork, the better the beer. It's pure science.

Weird timing for this thread - I just opened the box of my 2nd Etre-Gourmet order, which consisted of nothing but various Cantillons, and the 1 bottle of LP Framboise had a fair amount of sticky dried residue on the outside of the bottle, along with a strong acetic odor when sniffing around the crown cap. Basically made me quite pessimistic about the state of the beer still in the bottle (though still with a very high fill level), so figured I'd crack it open this weekend. I guess the Cantillon crown caps aren't much for a watertight seal - I know corks won't keep out seeping liquid when heat expands the contents of wine bottles, so presumably this is the same deal.

Guess I'll find out in a few days what, if any, effect the leakage has had on the beer.

Fortunately out of ALL the Cantillon I have received, I have only had 2 bottles that have done this. A 2007 Vintage Lou Pepe Kriek and a 2009 Vintage Rose de Gambrinus 750 mL. Both are currently stored on their sides in my long-term cellar and the leaking has stopped completely. *shoulder shrug*

Had this happen recently when I received a 750 of Rose de Gambrinus. Lost a couple of oz but it ended up tasting okay. The BA that sent the leaking beer (duffman929) sent another bottle to compensate. Thanks Kevin!

I'm not sure what he expects you to do. Leaking happens. It's part of the risk of trading.

This is a very good point. Better packing absolutely will not stop leaking. The only thing you can do to make leaking less likely it is to ship when it's cooler out. So if you agree to receive a box during the summer, don't be surprised if something leaks.

I'd say the main reason it probably doesn't make much difference is that the shipping companies will do whatever the fuck they want with it. It won't stay upright the whole time, though.

If any of yours leak I will be glad to check them using my palate as quality control. Unfortunately the sample size to get accurate results is 750 mL. :/

I don't work a for a courier, so I have no idea. But I've always figured that if I slap my shipping label on top of the box, then that'll probably help ensure they keep the box right-side-up.

Only was to pack a box better so a Cantillon doesn't leak is to not put a Cantillon in it

OP, please tell your trading partner to read this thread and understand that he needs to get over it and stop with the passive aggressive suggestions.

My bottles arrived ok, even with the heat. They were shipped upright.
