I don't think this is an obscure style anymore. I do, however, think it underrated. The Kolsch style brings a lot to the table. It is very crisp and refreshing, while showcasing light flavors valued in higher ABV beers, such as a saison.

Kolsch gives me flavors of straw, grass, a bit of funk, and a pleasing hop finish that will please the hophead in a lighter mood, yet also be a pleasure to the beer enthusiast that prefers a less dominant hop presence. We know low ABV beers are not as thoroughly appreciated as large beers. I say this because a flawed coffee imperial stout can attain a 4.0 rating relatively easily. Well crafted lighter styles often receive ratings in the 3's for nearly perfect examples of the style. While a Kolsch is no different than an American pale wheat ale in this regard, I feel it is under represented and appreciated at this time.

Personally I would like to ratings within style which would completely eliminate style bias.

So would I. I don't think it happens though.

I'm personally not a big Kolsch guy but I do think it's an underated style, along with every other Lager style. If I want something that's light and refreshing I'll either go for a Pilsner or an adjnuct Lager. I know a lot of people on here cringe at the mention of BMC lagers but if they're served ice cold (like they're intended to be) then they are among the most refreshing options in my opinion.

Like an earlier post mentioned, if people rated based on the style they are rating rather than base their ratings off other styles, I don't believe this issue would be occuring. Oh well, I suppose it's too late now :grinning:

The right kolsch at the right moment is a thing of absolute beauty. A true beer joy.

Unfortunately, getting a good American one is relatively rare, and imports have a tendency to taste like they were strained through pantyhose during their ocean voyage.

I recently had a flight at a bar that consisted of a kolsch, an IPA, a quad, and a RIS. It was the great subtle kolsch that I really fell for in that group.

A well done Kolsch or "Kolsch-like"(brewed outside of Cologne) beer is a beautiful thing. And i stress well done, because it the beauty is in the simplicity.
I don't think its an under rated style, its just an under brewed style.

There won't be any American Kolsch because by definition it has to be brewed in Cologne as Telik says.To brew a "Kolsch style" is a different matter but as Kolsch is tightly defined in strength, filtration and ingredients it doesn't lend itself to any tweaking if it's to retain its identity.
Glad that it's now accepted as a top fermented lager even by the BJCP.

Penn Brewery here made a kolsch style beer called Cool River Kolsch, and it was fantastic. Unfortunately they don't have plans to continue brewing it. Bummer.

Kelches are awesome beers. I like Gose beers a bit better, but in the summer time (and some wintry days) the style just fits.

Vastly underrated IMO. You have to be sure it's fresh.

If it became more popular people would start adding a bunch of hops to it and barrel age it.

A lot of folks are surprised for find out that Ballast Point Pale Ale--"the original"--is a Kolsch-style brew.

Very accessible and ok a little $$$ but solid.

You stole my thunder! I was about to post the same exact thing about Reissdorf Kolsch. I had it the other day and it was so delicious, flavorful and refreshing. I felt like I could have drank like 10 of them. I also had Gaffel Kolsch which was nice but not as good as this one.
P.S. I like that FC Barcelona glass.

Kölsch is nice for a summer day, but I prefer witbier or weizens, I like the taste of wheat bear.

I really enjoy this style. I love that brewers are making it to please their respective crowds who want to sample this style. When done right it's malty, dramatically crisp, and drinks so much like the style guidelines that if you get one it's like you will utter those guidelines as you are drinking. Malt is the star of the show in this beer and the skill of the brewer to subdue it such to let show only an almost imperceptible fruity sweetness( it's terribly delicate) from that malt!
