Are pint glasses really necessary?

I'm moving in August, so I started packing some things I didn't think I'd use early. Among those things were several pint glasses that I haven't used recently (perhaps some I've never used). I've always wondered if there is any real benefit to using a pint glass over what I'd call a "specialty glass" (snifters, tulips, chalices, goblets, etc.) for any beer style whatsoever outside of simply fitting a larger of quantity of beer in it. Considering that these glasses are designed to enhance the aromatic qualities and presentation of our beer, shouldn't every beer be given the opportunity to show off these features (granted, if they have those features to show off) in a decent quality glass? I do all of my reviews and try most of my new beers at home as restaurants and bars are too stimulating for me to stay focused. Am I the only one with pint glasses collecting dust or is there somebody else out there who finds that outside of a bar or restaurant, there isn't much need for the pint glass?

Boy howdy, you've just reopened a can o' worms.

The pure hatred for the shaker glass you speak of is immense on Beer Advocate. Just watch, you'll see.

I personally don't despise them. I have quite a few, and still love the hand feel. I guess it was the standard for so many years and I got accustomed to it.

I'm pretty excited to relive this moment, believe me. I've got boxes of those things.

I almost exclusively use pint glasses. I have a sniffer that I got from a Houston brewery with credit, but that is it. The brewery (Saint Arnolds) will recycle 6-pack holders if you return them. They give you credit for these.

The truth of the matter is, for me, there's 3 stages of enjoyment and generally certain styles will always fit into them.

    1. I'm currently taking a shower.

    2. I'm drinking a beer but not taking taste notes or it isn't a super complex style.

    3. I'm doing some serious tasting or drinking a more complex beer.

I never use my normal pint glasses, just because I have so much other awesome glasses. Most of the time I use some sort of tulip, snifter, or chalice. When I want a 'pint' glass, I go with special shaped stuff like Lawson's pint glass, the Sam Adams Perfect Pint, a nonic, etc.

Though at the end of the day, in my opinion, the Duvel glass can technically encompass ALL beers. But, variety is the spice of life after all.

WTF is that thing on #3?! on the right side with the beer in it. How can that possibly enhance the beer drinking experience?!

Anyone else just use wine glasses for big stouts and call that good enough for government work?

Shaker pint glasses are great for soda, water, iced tea, etc. And they're good (not great) for beer - plus they have the advantage of being more durable than a tulip or a wine glass and they're harder to spill, so they have their place in their place in the beer world, too. Especially for picnics, barbecues, orif you have clumsy house guests you don't want to risk a duvel tulip on. Those who want to ban them from the face of the Earth are somewhat overdramatic. Even if you don't drink your beer from them, use them for other drinks (unless you have fancy specialize glassware for every beverage in your house).

The pint glass is perfect if you think you will need to throw something heavy at someone. Other than that, not a lot of uses.

It depends what kind of pint glasses we're speaking of here. Are we speaking of this......[IMG]
    or this....................[IMG]

    or even this....[IMG]

I tend to use tulip pint glasses (see picture #2) among pint glasses. For me, it's a lot of fun to drink out of one than a boring, clunky shaker pint (see picture #1). I don't use shaker pints for drinking at home, just collecting, and even then I haven't purchased one in years.

That would be an IPA glass. I had the same reaction as you until a friend explained to me how it worked and I haven't regretted buying one since. The glass is very thin which keeps it from absorbing the IPAs chill, keeping it colder longer, the way it narrows makes it ideal for nosing, actually better than any snifter glass really. It has the standard etching in the bottom which keeps the bubbles streaming, keeping the head intact longer and more solid. Finally, the ribbed handle creates a small swirl every time you take a sip which acts just the same as if you had swirled the glass and agitated the beer every time you sipped, keeps the aroma strong and the head solid. I know that last part sounds like T-total bullshit, but it works very well.

Trust me, you will find it most wonderfully cathartic to thin the glassware herd. You know it, a lot of those guys have over-stayed their welcome. Let them go, return them to the wild.

Start over with glasses. Personally I think the snifter is the best for everything and even works for IPAs despite what some naysayers out there will tell you. Since it doesn't have the capacity of a pint glass you think you are drinking more beer than you actually are.
