Okay, it's not what you think - I'm not going to ask what your first beer was. Rather, consider this hypothetical (or maybe for some of us real ) situation : your son/daughter/transgender child comes to you, a seasoned beer advocate, and says, "Dad and/or Mom, since you are an old hat at this beer drinking thing, what would you recommend to me, your beloved and now legally-of-drinking-age child to consume as their VERY FIRST BEER ? My path awaits only its' first step."

Anything from Rogue. That way they can have the assumption that craft beer is garbage and it will save them a lifetime of truck chasing, trading, tens of thousands of dollars and countless headaches

Depends entirely on their taste preferences. If they like chocolate/coffee, Highwater Campfire Stout. If they like bitter stuff, Sam Adams Boston Lager is what got me started. If they like sweet stuff, shock top raspber-... Screw it, tell them to drink wine as that's more dignified.

Before I full on got into craft beer I started with Guinness, Sam Adams, Newcastle, Pyramid Hefeweizen, Lagunitas IPA and other widely distributed stuff that beats the hell out of BMC garbage. That stuff is accessible enough for a beginner, because most beginners don't have the palate yet to handle the BCBSs, Plinys and Headys of the craft beer world.

My kids (19 and 18) don't like hoppy IPAs. They're OK with amber ales and browns. I'd like to introduce them to a go-to beer so that they might avoid the hard stuff.

HA ! Maybe that would turn them off of beer forever, leaving more for the rest of us ?

+1 on the Weinstephaner Heff. If they had never, ever had a beer, but wanted to start getting into it, I'd pour them a pint of that.

I suppose I should have added this at the beginning of the thread, but I'd probably choose something German as well. Maybe an Aventinus Tap 6...

@Providence and @AugustusRex said it best. Hefe or Belgian Dubbel/Wit are the top choices for not steering your offspring away from beer. An IPA might chase them away because of the Higher IBUs.

I would give them the worst beer I have at the moment so they don´t start to look at my fridge as a source for good brews. Maybe something contaminated or with funky flavor, then in my deathbed I would come clean about that scam to let them know that there´s great beer in the world. Its expensive enough to pamper one craft beer drinker.

I would give them the worst beer I've ever had and tell them that this is what great craft is all about. Hopefully, the experience would turn them off entirely, and alcohol would not be a part of their young lives.

Take them to a local brewpub and order a flight of samples. That way they can figure out for themselves what they like and don't like.
