My neighbor came over and told me that the local grocery "had that crazy beer you drink marked down, 50% off."

I had to check it out, and to my delight got, 3 4 packs of Stone Ruination for $4.50 each, 3 Dogfish 60 minute IPA sixers at $5.00 each, 2 Dogfish India Brown Ale 6 packs for $5.00 each, New Holland The Poet and Mad Hatter 6 packs for $5.00 each, and much more. Everything was bottled in January or sooner with one exception, 21st Amendment Bitter American cans, canned in February of 2013--yikes! Haters are gonna hate, but this frugal SOB is stoked! What solid scores (fresh beer at a marked down price) have you made lately?

Everything sounds too good to be true but good for you if you scored.
Except for the 21st amendment, just open those and pour them down the drain

Got a bottle of Clown Shoes Extremely Angry Beast marked down to $6.50. Also, Thirsty Dog was selling their Barktoberfest in November for $15 a case - couldn't pass that up.

It does sound too good to be true, but the markdown is a result of a local grocer not fully appreciating what they carry. You have to watch them carefully, or you'll be buying New Belgium's summer seasonal from last year that isn't even available this year. About that 21st Amendment, I cracked one, and granted I have had 4 ahead of it (6% or less), it's not too bad.

I would have bought one of each and then told the owner the prices were really low. Oh wait, wrong thread.

Great! Old Beer. This does nothing but a disservice to the brewers and the consumer. The retailer should have returned these beers to their distributor and had fresh beer for you to buy at a fair price.

as a brewer, I find this practice to be a real bummer. I actually have fired retail customers for this.

good for you though... glad you found some stuff you like at a discount.

Most out of date beer isn't even marked down around these parts.

Wow- you're really hardcore! Those beers were all three months old or less, if I'm reading that right (2013 being the sole exception). If this is the new world of beer we're headed for, I'll gladly take it, but I'm still not so sure I'd call them 'Old'.

Not all of it was old, but yes this store does not always have the freshest beer, which I think is a combination of it not being bought, and the distributors do a poor job policing their stock. The store is not in a "craft beer zone" (whatever that means); most folks around here and within the store's service area buy Natural Light and similar beers. Ultimately, I think the store will shrink their craft offerings. Like I mentioned earlier, I bought Dogfish 60 minute, bottled in January and March of this year, but they did have two or three six packs that were bottled in May of 2014.

Long story short, I would prefer, like you said that the retailer return the beers to their distributor for a fresher, price appropriate option.

I found sixers of Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale and Mama's yella pils on the closeout rack at Kroger for 3.99 each. Great beers for that price.

My favorite is that every year a local grocery store marks down SN Bigfoot to $7.99 because it is a year old. Best time to stock up!

YOU as the craft beer buyer have be familiar with what you are buying. If you're interested in NB summer seasonal and find its not being brewed this summer do not purchase it. You can find all of that info here on BA. As far as distributers are concerned its not their responsibility to check dates. They sell beer as much as they can and DONT want it back. That is the responsibility of the shop owner. And they will gladly sell you very old beer form then regular price. I've pointed this to my main shop way more than once. As far as dates on on board with @TongoRad I am not am NOT a fanatic. My IPAs do not haven't be under 2 weeks old to drink. However going on over 2 years on that 21st is very old and even in cans that beer will be no where what it was. And oxidation will surely have affected it and hops faded drastically.

Wow, all you people may burn in hell.

Did you first let the store owner know that these prices were out of line? Did you offer to pay what you know to be market price instead of their asking price?

If not, karma will KICK YOUR A!!!

You know after thinking about what you said and then rereading the post I'm not sure I could have purchased that volume of product without feeling like I was screwing someone. So I can see you're point. But the other side of the coin is people purchase countless amounts of product that Is "outdated " according to the brewer and there truly is a fair amount of upricing going on. Stores 2 miles apart will have a dollar or two differences in the same town and state. And what about the BCBS phenomenom? Shops differ in price enormously in the same region. All supply and demand ....and its not going anywhere soon. I work in the food sales industry. White eggs just jumped almost an dollar a dozen due to Easter. Ribeyes and sirloins jump way up in price before Memorial Day and July 4th. It goes on and on in many industries. Love it or leave it it ain't changing soon. So integrity plays factor. Some have it some don't care. Unfortunately there is no true answer. Its what YOU believe inside yourself.
